WOU's Chalmers shines in game one win, Wolves split two with #10 NNU

MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon baseball team got a stellar start from Dylan Chalmers in a 6-2 game one win before dropping game two 4-3 to split Friday's doubleheader with 10th-ranked Northwest Nazarene at WOU Baseball Field.

Chalmers didn't allow an earned run in seven innings for WOU (16-15 overall, 10-8 GNAC), giving up five hits with striking out six and walking two.

The Wolves trailed 1-0 heading into the fourth when Randy Stultz hit a sac fly to tie it before Emiliano Alarcon gave WOU the lead with a two-run double down the left field line to score Owen Bischoff and John Oleson.

WOU tacked on two more in the fifth on a two-run double to left center by Stultz before AJ Cortese hit an RBI single in the seventh to make it 6-1. NNU (23-7-1, 13-5) added a run in the ninth, but got no closer.

Stultz, the GNAC Player of the Week last week, went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two doubles - giving him 11 RBI over his previous six games. Cortese also had two hits - including a triple, two runs and an RBI.

In the second game, WOU trailed 2-0 heading into its half of the fourth before Oleson hit a two-run double to right to tie it up. However, the Nighthawks got a two-run homer in the sixth to take the lead for good - though WOU got within a run on a pinch-hit RBI single from Trey Nelson.

Owen Murdock got the loss, going six innings and giving up three earned runs on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks. WOU collected eight hits by eight different players in the second game.

WOU and NNU conclude their series with a doubleheader starting noon Saturday at WOU Baseball Field.
