Wolves take down Nighthawks in five-set thriller Saturday in Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon volleyball team took down Northwest Nazarene 3-2 (22-25, 21-25, 25-19, 25-23, 15-13) Saturday in a thrilling come-from-behind victory in New PE Building.

The Wolves (8-2 overall, 1-1 GNAC) started the match down 2-0 against the Nighthawks (3-7, 0-2) after dropping sets one and two. WOU then took set three after starting on a 7-2 run and never trailing NNU. In set four, the Nighthawks battled with WOU early before the Wolves took the lead and never let it go - winning the set 25-23 thanks to a clutch kill by Finley Buman (assisted by Samantha Darby) to force a deciding fifth set. The Wolves in set five kept it close with the Nighthawks, never trailing by more than a point before taking the lead down the stretch and never looking back, winning 15-13, and with that, the match.

Buman finished with eight kills and five blocks while Bailee Hartsook had eight kills and four blocks. Madison Hornback had a team-best 15 kills along with 3 blocks. Chloe Asciutto ended with nine kills and five blocks. Sidney Friesen, Maela Honma and Kealani Rosa all finished with four aces - with Honma also adding 11 kills and Rosa adding a WOU-high 31 assists. Darby ended with 20 assists and two aces.

The Wolves now head North to take on Alaska in Fairbanks 8 p.m. PT Thursday.
