ANCHORAGE, Alaska --- Western Oregon freshman
Maela Honma's career-high 17 kills helped the Wolves break a streak against Alaska Anchorage that dates back to when she was in the first grade as WOU beat the Seawolves 3-1 (25-20, 27-25, 23-25, 25-22) Saturday at Alaska Airlines Center.
The victory snaps WOU's (9-3, 2-2) 21-match losing streak to Alaska Anchorage (7-7, 1-3) that dates back to 2012.
The Wolves took the first two sets before UAA bounced back in set three to take it 25-23.
The fourth set was a whirlwind of streaks as the Wolves jumped out to a 7-1 lead after a
Madison Hornback kill. But an 18-6 run for the Seawolves suddenly put them up 19-13 and the match seemed destined for a fifth set. Down 21-15, a
Chloe Asciutto kill ignited a 10-1 WOU run that was capped by a match-ending kill from Honma.
Along with Honma's 17 kills (she also had a .368 hitting percentage) - she added a team-high 17 digs. Hornback added 14 kills and 10 digs while Asciutto had nine kills, seven digs, six blocks and two aces.
Samantha Darby had a team-high 28 assists while
Kealani Rosa added 19.
The Wolves return home next week as they open a three-game home stand 7 p.m. Thursday against Simon Fraser.
