WOU volleyball opens season with win over Cal Poly Humboldt Thursday in Hawaii

Hilo, HAWAII --- The Western Oregon volleyball team collected it's first win of the season as the Wolves took down Cal Poly Humboldt 3-1 (25-21, 15-25, 26-24, 25-23) Thursday at the Hawai'i Fall Volleyball Challenge in Hilo.

The Wolves (1-0 overall), started the match going point-for-point with the Lumberjacks (0-1) before falling behind 16-9 late in set one. WOU then went on a 5-0 run led by Maela Honma's serving. WOU later completed another 7-1 run in set one behind Madison Hornback's serving and clutch kills from Chloe Asciutto and Honma, ultimately allowing WOU to take set one 25-21.

In set two, Cal Poly Humboldt made up for the set one loss in a strong way, winning the set 25-15. But Western Oregon didn't look back, battling hard and winning the next two sets 26-24 and 25-23, respectively. The Wolves fought hard  thanks to impressive offensive action from the freshman Honma and the 2023 GNAC kills per set leader Hornback.

Maela finished with 14 kills while Hornback had nine and a solo block. Kilinoelehua Helm finished with six kills and four block assists, and Kealani Rosa led WOU with 20 assists while Samantha Darby added 13.

The Wolves continue action Friday in Hilo, playing Hawaii Pacific at 1 p.m. PT before turning around for a evening game against Bemidji State at 10 p.m. PT.
