HILO, Hawaii --- The Western Oregon volleyball team battled it out with Hawaii Hilo Saturday night, claiming victory over the Vulcans in five sets (22-25, 29-27, 25-22, 22-25, 15-10) to sweep the Hawai'i Fall Volleyball Challenge and start the season 4-0 for the second time since 1999 (the first was last year).
The Wolves (4-0 overall) dropped set one to the Vulcans (4-2), but quickly regrouped and took set two thanks to clutch kills from
Kilinoelehua Helm. Western Oregon took set three before dropping set four to Hawaii Hilo, forcing a fifth set in the Aloha State. In set five, the Wolves and the Vulcans started going point-for-point before the Wolves took command, ending the set with an 8-2 run to take the final set 15-10.
Helm finished the match with 12 kills and seven blocks while
Madison Hornback finished with 19 kills. Both
Kealani Rosa and
Samantha Darby finished with 23 assists, and
Maela Honma ended with 12 kills alongside five aces.
The Wolves take the court again Friday at 10 a.m. when they take on Azusa Pacific to start the Cougar Volleyball Classic in San Marcos, Calif.
