MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon volleyball team gave No. 21 Alaska Fairbanks a run for its money Thursday as after dropping the first two sets the Wolves took set three and were in position to take game four, but came up short and fell 3-1 (25-22, 25-18, 23-25, 25-23) at the Wolves Athletic Center.
WOU, after dropping the first two sets, was tied with the Nanooks at 22 in the third before a UAF hitting error and a Sydney Friesen ace made it set point at 24-22 - which the Wolves eventually closed out 25-23.
In the fourth set, the game was again tied at 22 before back-to-back kills by the Nanooks made it 24-22 - and they too closed it out at 25-23 to win the set and match.
Maela Honma paced the Wolves with 13 kills and three aces to go along with nine digs and two blocks.
Melissa Hadley in just two sets of action had seven kills,
Chloe Asciutto finished with seven kills and seven blocks,
Samantha Darby had 22 assists and
Kilinoelehua Helm had a team-high 19 digs.
WOU returns to action 1 p.m. Saturday against Alaska Anchorage back in Monmouth.
