MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon football team forced six turnovers and scored 21 unanswered points in the second quarter to pull away for a 41-20 victory over Western New Mexico on Saturday at McArthur Field.
The Wolves (3-2 overall, 2-1 LSC) and Mustangs (1-5, 0-4) were tied 13-13 early in the second quarter before the Wolves answered on the next drive with
Jermaine Land capping a 10-play, 64-yard drive with four consecutive runs for 29 yards - the last being a 6-yard touchdown run to make it 20-13 Wolves.
WNMU got the ball back in WOU territory on its next drive before
Malik Ross read a swing pass perfectly and picked it off for the Wolves and ran it back 59 yards for the touchdown to make it 27-13 Wolves with 6:06 left in the second quarter. Ross had a big day for the Wolves, finishing with the pick six, a sack, forced fumble and four tackles.
Another turnover later in the quarter forced by huge hit from
Elijah Pula set the Wolves up for another score just before the half - this one a 1-yard touchdown plunge from
Carson Workman to make it 34-13 WOU.
Workman added a second rushing touchdown in the third quarter to make it 41-13 and WNMU added a late fourth quarter score to make the final 41-20.
Land paced the Wolves offense with 85 yards rushing and a score. Workman finished with three rushing touchdowns and 37 yards while
Tyler Konold had a rushing touchdown as well for the Wolves.
Aden Murphy led WOU with 12 tackles while
Malcolm Liufau added seven.
The Wolves hit the road next week to take on Eastern New Mexico.
