MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon women's basketball team used a big third quarter to beat a ranked team for the first time in 10 years as the Wolves upended No. 16 Alaska Anchorage 77-69 on Saturday at Wolves Athletic Center.
For the Wolves (5-3 overall, 2-0 GNAC), it's the first win over a ranked opponent since beating No. 8 Seattle Pacific 77-69 on Jan. 22, 2015 - a stretch of 32 consecutive losses to ranked opponents.
As for Saturday, WOU trailed the Seawolves (7-2, 0-2) 31-26 at the half but eventually tied it on putback from
Natalie Brown and a layup by
Ciona Wells to make it 38-38 with 6:21 left in the third.
WOU never trailed again.
The Wolves turned those two baskets into a 14-0 run capped by Wells to make it 50-40 with 3:00 left in the third.
WOU never allowed the Seawolves to get closer than four the rest of the game.
Triniti Youngblood and
Kylani Rookstool led the Wolves with 21 points apiece with Rookstool adding six rebounds. Wells finished with 10 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals while
Natalie Brown just missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.
The Wolves return to action 6 p.m. Wednesday when they host Warner Pacific.
