SPOKANE, Wash. --- It was an eventful first day for the Western Oregon track and field team at the GNAC Indoor Championships on Monday as
Mark Warren defended his weight throw title in record fashion,
Amariyah Clay edged a teammate by one point for the pentathlon title and a school record was set in the men's 200.
Warren, who broke the school and GNAC record in the weight throw earlier this season, improved that mark with a distance of 63 feet, 8.75 inches - the 12th-best throw in D-II this season. Teammate
Justin Parnell took fifth (55-9.25 while
Mason Detzler took seventh (50-2.5) to score points for WOU – both personal bests.
Clay took home the pentathlon title with the second-best point total in WOU history at 3,436, edging her teammate
Macy Clemens by one point (3,435 – 3
rd-best total in WOU history).

Going into the final event – the 800 – Clay sat in second place, three points ahead of Clemens while both trailed first-place Vivien Liessfeld of Alaska Anchorage by a 100 and 103 points, respectively. Clemens finished in 2:32.24 to finish with 665 points, but Clay finished just 0.17 second back at 2:32.41 for 663 points to keep a one-point edge. Both more than made up the difference over Liessfeld, who finished in 2:45.93 for 507 points as she took third with 3,380 points.
Jack Burgett broke a 10-year-old WOU record in the 200 during prelims with a time of 21.55 seconds - .05 seconds faster than
Cody Warner's 2015 WOU mark and good for third in the prelims as he gets set for Tuesday's final.
In finals for the women's team, which sits in first place after the first day (five of 17 events finished) with 45 points, Ujunwa Nwokomna took second in the long jump with a distance of 19-0.75 – finishing 2.5 inches behind first place.Â
Kyla Potratz made the podium by taking third in the 5,000 with a time of 17:51.87, while the women's distance medley relay team of
Kaydence Nguyen,
Madeline Lambing,
Charlotte Gardner and
Jazmine Liebl helped the Wolves take third with a time of 12:43.78.
Jazmine Dotson ran a PR in the 60 at 7.81 – tied for fourth in WOU history. She also improved her fifth-best time in school history in the 200 at 25.73 seconds (but didn't qualify for the final in either event).
On the men's side,Â
Tate Herber finished fifth in the high jump with a mark of 6-3.50, good for four points, while
Gabe Burchfield took eighth (5-11.50) to score a point for WOU.
Logan Parker finished sixth in the 5,000 with a time of 15:04.37 to score three points for the Wolves and Phillip Staniunas took fifth in the pole vault (13-9.25). The men's medley relay team of
Grant Bohannon,
Teo Le,
Landon Theisen and
Remedan Seman took fifth with a time of 10:36.95.
Going into the second day of the heptathlon, Burchfield sits in first place with 2,799 points with the 60 hurdles, pole vault and 1,000 remaining. Burchfield won the shot put (12.49 meters) and high jump (1.92 meters) Monday while taking second in the 60 (7.37) and long jump (6.41 meters). He's currently 30 points ahead of Drew Klein of Central Washington.
