WOU men claim four GNAC Indoor titles Tuesday to finish 3rd, women take 4th

SPOKANE, Wash. --- The Western Oregon men's track and field team won four GNAC Indoor Championship event titles Tuesday to propel the Wolves to a third-place finish while the women took fourth at The Podium.

On the men's side, WOU finished with 114 points - three points behind second-place Central Washington. Western Washington won the team title with 143 points.

WOU's Gabe Burchfield broke his own school record and moved into eighth on the GNAC all-time list in the heptathlon with 5,106 points – becoming the 10th athlete in GNAC history and first WOU athlete to cross the 5,000-point barrier in the event. He entered the day in first place and widened his gap by taking first in the 60 hurdles and the pole vault before taking third in the 1,000 to claim the title by just more than 700 points.
 
Sophomore Brennen Murphy improved his own school record and blazed a 47.81 in the 400 to win the conference title. It's also the fifth-fastest time in GNAC history. Freshman Owen Frazier picked up points for WOU in the 400 as well – taking fifth with a PR of 49.79.
 
Keeton Sanchez claimed the mile title in 4:11.69 – a season-best and an NCAA provisional mark. He finished 0.6 seconds ahead of Northwest Nazarene's Ian Stockett.
 
The WOU men's 4x400 team of Amari Hendrix, Isaiah Rodriguez, Jack Burgett and Murphy set a new school record while winning the GNAC title in 3:15.40 – beating the old WOU record set 15 years ago by .03 seconds.
 
Isaiah Rodriguez improved his No. 4 time in school history in the 800 while taking second in the event at 1:50.15. Sanchez took fourth at 1:52.39.
 
Burgett, a freshman, improved his school record in the 200 with a time of 21.53 in Tuesday's final – good for third place (Alaska Anchorage's Joshua Caleb set the meet record with a time of 21.07).
 
Tate Herber finished fifth in the 60 hurdles in 8.32 seconds – an improvement of .06 seconds from the day before to move him to No. 3 on the WOU all-time list. Herber also finished fifth in the triple jump at 41-11.25.
 
Freshman Grant McDowell finished fifth in the 60 at 6.94 seconds - .03 off his season best (which is fourth on the WOU all-time list).
 
Mark Warren took fifth in the shot put at 14.33 meters (47-0.25) while Ray Gerrard was right behind him thanks to a PR to finish sixth (14.28 meters, 46-10.25).
 
WOMEN
The WOU women, who claimed their lone title Monday in the pentathlon (Amariyah Clay), finished with 92 points to take fourth - finishing behind Western Washington (143 points), Central Washington (114) and Simon Fraser (92).

Ujunwa Nwokoma set a new personal best and improved her No. 2 spot in WOU history in the triple jump at 11.96 meters (39-3) to take second place in the event while Clay set a PR and moved to No. 3 on the WOU all-time list with a mark of 11.85 meters (38-10.5) to finish third.
 
Aaliyah Taba took third in the 60 hurdles with a time of 9.02 – a PR for the freshman and the No. 4 time in WOU history.
 
Nerissa Thompson took fourth in the 60 at 7.59 seconds.
 
WOU took the No. 4 through No. 7 spots in the high jump with Amity Deters taking fourth at 5-4.25 and Olivia Boyd, Amariyah Clay and Kylie Griffin taking fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively, at 5-2.25.
 
Kaydence Nguyen took seventh in the 800 at 2:21.19 after moving to No. 7 on the WOU all-time list in the prelims with a time of 2:19.13. She's the first WOU athlete in six years to crack the top 10 in the event.
 
Guinevere Rydberg scored a point for the Wolves with a season-best toss in the shot put at 38-11.5 – good for eighth place.

The Wolves continue indoor action Saturday at the George Fox Indoor in Newberg.
