BURNABY, B.C. — The Western Oregon women's basketball team imposed its will early and finished strong, pulling away for a 68-49 win over Simon Fraser on Saturday afternoon at the West Gym.
After an early back-and-forth opening quarter, WOU (8-4, 3-1 GNAC) began to take control behind its defense and perimeter shooting. The Wolves used a 10-2 run late in the first quarter to grab momentum, then held Simon Fraser to just nine points in the second quarter to carry a 35-24 lead into halftime.
Western Oregon continued to grind in the third before breaking the game open in the fourth. The Wolves outscored SFU (7-8, 2-2 GNAC) 24-9 in the final quarter, fueled by efficient shooting, transition baskets and steady pressure on the defensive end.
Ciona Wells led WOU with 20 points, while Kylani Rookstool added 19 points and six rebounds. Enid Vaifanua chipped in 14 points as the Wolves shot 56.3 percent from 3-point range and forced 15 turnovers, converting them into 18 points.
The Wolves return home to host Montana State Billings on Thursday.
