SILVER CITY, N.M.--Western Oregon set school records for rushing yards and total offense while rolling to a 56-28 win over host Western New Mexico on Saturday afternoon at Ben Altamirano Field.
The Wolves ran for 527 yards, destroying the previous mark against Division II teams of 302 against Simon Fraser in 2017. WOU's 700 yards of total offense eclipsed the previous record of 695, set against Dixie State in 2012. WOU also rushed for 452 yards earlier this season against NAIA Southern Oregon.
The road win is the third straight victory for the Wolves, who moved over .500 overall at 5-4 and improved to 3-4 in the Lone Star Conference. The Mustangs are now 3-6 on the season and 2-5 in league play.
Tyler Konold and
Jermaine Land both ran for over 100 yards, with Konold running for 144 on seven carries and Land scrambling for 131 yards on 11 carries. Both had a touchdown.
Jayshon Limar added 74 yards , packing the ball 14 times with a touchdown. Quarterback
Jordan McCarty was just shy of 100 yards with 97 on the ground, while throwing for 146 yards of 11-of-20 marksmanship and two scores.
All rushing totals were season bests. It marked the first time that the Wolves had a 100-yard+ rusher in a game this season, and they nearly had three today. Eight different receivers caught passes, led by
Cyris Taylor's three catches for 53 yards.
"It was a great job by the offensive line to create a lot of running holes for our backs," head coach
Arne Ferguson said after the game. "Our defense was solid too with 11 tackles for loss.
Western Oregon scored on their first drive of the game after WMNU turned the ball over on downs. McCarty found
Jaylen Fite for 19 yards to cap a 12-play, 95 yard drive to get the Wolves on the scoreboard first. Western New Mexico answered a minute later with a 42-yard scoring pass to make it 7-7 at the end of the first period.
McCarty found Land for a 34-yard catch and run in the second quarter (8:48) to give WOU a 14-7 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, quarterback
Brooks Ferguson had a pass batted right back to him and he then scampered 27-yards for paydirt to make the count 21-7. That would be the first of three third quarter scores to help the Wolves break the game open. McCarty also ran for a three-yard TD and Land had a 12-yard run to make it 35-14 with one quarter to play.
WOU quickly added to their margin five minutes into the fourth quarter on Limar's seven-yard run to push the lead to 42-14. The Mustangs would add two rushing touchdowns in the final period but WOU also added two long touchdown runs from Konold (65 yards) and
Michael Gibson III (53 yards) for the final verdict of 56-28.
Kaydn Butcher was 8-for-8 on extra point opportunities. Punter
Kyle Babcock averaged 56.3 yards per punt. On defense,
Andrew Soles had eight solo tackles while
Jayden Brannan had a sack and five tackles for loss.
Western Oregon will look to keep the momentum running next Saturday (Nov. 7) when they host West Texas A&M at McArthur Field at 1:05 pm.
