Wolves Battle Falcons Close, Ultimately Fall, 3-1

Seattle Pacific scores late goal to seal win over host Western Oregon.

Box Score MONMOUTH, Ore.--Western Oregon held tight with one of the top teams in the conference before Seattle Pacific sealed the deal with a goal in the 88th minute for a 3-1 win on Thursday afternoon at the WOU Turf Field.

The Falcons, who defeated the Wolves back on September 19 by the score of 3-0, held off their hosts to improve to 7-3-1 on the season and to 4-2-1 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Western Oregon now 2-6-3 overall and 1-4-2 in league play.

Seattle Pacific scored first just six and a half minutes into the contest, but Western Oregon quickly answered two minutes later. At the 8:23 mark, Maya Courtenay popped a shot in the goal after a pass from Bailey Boyd to tie the match at 1-1. It was the third goal of the season for Courtenay, tied for the team lead, and her eight total points paces the Wolves squad.

The deadlock was almost the score at the break before SPU's Ashlyn Valdovinos converted a penalty kick opportunity in the 42nd minute to give her Falcons the 2-1 edge at the break.

The Wolves were not able to find the back of the net again, while the visitors added one more insurance score at 87:37 to put a ribbon on the win.

The stat sheet was virtually even. Both squads had 14 shots in the match, with six of SPU's on goal against five for WOU. The Wolves had four corner kick opportunities to two for the Falcons.

Western Oregon will get back to action this coming Saturday (Oct. 10) against visiting St Martin's. Start time is 10 a.m..
