ELLENSBURG, Wash. --- Makenna Vierck sits in fifth place in the heptathlon and
Gabe Burchfield is in eighth in the decathlon after day one at the GNAC Outdoor Combined Events Championships on Monday at Recreation Sports Complex.
Vierck, a freshman, has 2,698 points after four of the seven events - 337 points behind leader Ellie DeGroot of Central Washington (3,035 points). Vierck placed fifth in the 100 hurdles, high jump and 200 while taking 10th in the shot put. WOU's
Alexa McGowan is in seventh (2,595 points) while
Olivia Boyd is in eighth - though Boyd did win the high jump with a height of 1.63 meters (5 feet, 4.5 inches).
On the men's side in the decathlon, Burchfield has 3,208 points through five of the 10 events to sit in eighth place - 687 points behind leader Anders Larsen of Alaska Anchorage. Burchfield scored 730 points in the 100 with a time of 11.61 seconds with his top place finish of the day coming in the shot put - taking third.
