T&F captures team titles at Pilot Classic

PORTLAND
, Ore. - The Western Oregon University men's and women's track and field teams each captured the team championship at the Pilot Indoor, Friday, Feb. 6.
 
The men put up 114.5 team points to top six others teams at the meet while the women edged Seattle Pacific and three other teams with 84 points, to earn the team title at this meet in which all races were hand-timed.
 
Amanda Wright earned 10 team points as she won the 3,000-meter with a time of 10:48.9. This time also placed her sixth on the Wolves all-time list and seventh in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference this season.
 
Meryl Butcher won the women's 400m dash with a 1:01.1, the seventh best time in the GNAC this season. That mark also placed her 10th all-time in school history. Erica Zambon finished third in the race and posted the ninth-best time in the GNAC with a 1:01.9. Ashley Berry also finished fourth (1:02.5) giving the Wolves 21 points in the event.
 
Kelsey Neilson also earned 10 team points for Western Oregon as she won the women's high jump by clearing the bar at 5-1.25 (1.55). This mark also placed her fourth in the GNAC in 2009.
 
On the men's side, Anthony Marin won the 35-pound weight throw with a toss of 48-6 (16.10). Jason Slowey also finished third in the event and placed seventh in the GNAC (14.78m) while Matt Schryvers finished fourth and placed eighth in the conference (14.56).
 
Zeke Van Patten won the men's 800m with a time of 1:56.8, the top time in the GNAC this year and the seventh-best mark in school history. Jeff Long ran a 1:57.7 in the event to earn the second-best mark in the GNAC and collect eight team points for the men. Travis Banker placed his name on the GNAC list (seventh) with a time of 2:02.6.
 
In the mile, Braxton Jackson registered a 4:30.5 to finish second in the event at the Pilot Classic and place sixth on the 2009 GNAC list. In the same event, Brandon Snook earned the eighth-best mark in the GNAC this season with a 4:32.5.
 
The Wolves also finished first and third in the 400m at the meet as Carson O'Brien posted a 52.5 and Marshall Hanshumaker notched a 53.8.
 
Zeb Udell and Robert Wegner both cleared 6-4 (1.93m) in the men's high jump to tie for second in the GNAC and earn 14 team points for the men.
 
The men' team dominated the sprint medley finishing first, second and fourth to collect 23 team points.
 
In other action, Alyssa Taylor finished second in both the women's weight throw and shot put for 16 team points. Mandy Keifer also earned a second place finish as registered a 28.0 in the 200m dash.
 
"This was just a good, entertaining, old-school type of track meet," said Western Oregon head coach Mike Johnson. "We were able to race a lot of our student-athletes, many of them out of event as we continue to experiment and train before the GNAC championships (Feb. 21)."
 
Johnson continued, "We were able to establish some people and get some GNAC marks," he noted. "When you put it all together it was a great meet."
 
The next meet for the Western Oregon men's and women's track and field teams will be Feb. 14-15 at the Husky Classic and UW Indoor Open in Seattle.
