NAMPA, Idaho – The Western Oregon women's soccer team continues to find ways to win against Great Northwest Athletic Conference opponents, as they scored two goals within four minutes of each other en route to shutting out Northwest Nazarene, 2-0, on Saturday, Oct. 15th at the NNU Soccer Field.
WOU (5-5-3, 4-3-2 GNAC) has now shutout five opponents this season, with three of them coming during conference play, a feat that has not happened since 2008.
In the 24th minute of play
Lauren Vieira saw an opening to fire in what could be her longest distance goal of the season for the Wolves, and her first goal of the year. She rocketed the ball from 30 yards on the right to get it past the Crusader's goalie and into the top left corner of the goal.
It did not take long for the offense to strike again. They continued to keep pressure on NNU's defense, continuing to drive towards the goal box. Western's offense advanced as
LaChante Horton saw an opening in the 28th minute, which allowed her to muscle the ball past the goalie from five yards out.
The Wolves' offense got the best of the Crusaders, as they stopped NNU's offense from gaining any momentum towards senior goalie,
Brittney Rigtrup. Western's defense and Rigtrup worked together to only see six shots on goal, which allowed Rigtrup to earn her fifth shutout on the season.
Western Oregon's offense also stopped Northwest Nazarene's attack chances, during the stretch of 13 minutes. The Wolves outshot the Crusaders five to three, before Northwest Nazarene had the chance to fire another shot in the 26th minute.
WOU has now shutout NNU twice this season. Their last matchup came on Sept. 15th when they beat them 3-0 at Western's home pitch. The Wolves now lead the Crusaders with an all-record of 21-7-2,.
Western Oregon returns home for their last two-game home stand as they get set to welcome in the Central Washington Wildcats on Oct. 20th, and Seattle Pacific Falcons on Oct. 22nd to their home pitch. Kickoff against the Wildcats is 3:00 p.m. and 11:00 a.m. versus the Falcons.
