MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon football team looks to capture its first Great Northwest Athletic Conference title in school history when the Wolves travel to Arcata, Calif., to face No. 14 Humboldt State on Saturday, Nov. 12, at 1:00 p.m. The Wolves and Lumberjacks enter the regular season finale with identical 6-1 conference marks as the winner will take home the league crown.
Western Oregon enters the game with a mark of 6-4 overall, 6-1 in league play, after the Wolves fell to NCAA FCS member Montana, 32-7, last week. Despite the loss to the Grizzlies, Western Oregon has won three straight against NCAA Division II opponents, including a 40-24 win over Humboldt State earlier this year.
The Wolves bring a balanced offensive and defensive attack into the game as Western Oregon ranks second in the league in scoring at 29.1 points per game while ranking third in the conference in scoring defense at 26.5 points per game.
Senior quarterback
Evan Mozzochi leads the Western Oregon air attack as he has averaged 221.8 yards passing per game while completing 55.4 percent of his attempts. He ranks second in the league in passing efficiency (135.), total offense (22.9) and touchdowns (16).
Mozzochi's favorite target throughout the year has been wide receiver
Trevor Gates. The senior has set a single-season school record with 970 yards receiving as he leads the league with 57 receptions.
On the defensive side of the ball, junior defensive back
Bryce Peila leads the way as he leads the league with eight interceptions as the Wolves lead the league with 22 takeaways.
Humboldt State enters the important contest with a mark of 8-1 overall, 6-1 in league play, as the Lumberjacks rank No. 8 in this week's NCAA Division II Super Region IV poll. A win against the Wolves would give the Lumberjacks their first conference crown.
Quarterback Mike Proulx has had an outstanding year for the Lumberjacks as he leads the league in 13 categories, including total offense (302.0 ypg), passing yards per game (294.7), pass efficiency (152.0) and passing touchdowns (22).
Western Oregon leads the all-time series against Humboldt State, 18-14, after the Wolves earlier victory this year. In the 40-24 win, Kenny Haynes rushed for 110 yards as Mozzochi threw for three touchdowns in front of a sell-out crowd for Homecoming.
