BELMONT, Calif. -- The Western Oregon men's basketball team never trailed as they extended their win streak to nine games as three Wolves players scored double-digit points, to beat Notre Dame de Namur, 77-60, on Saturday, Dec. 17th.
Kolton Nelson led the team with 19 points as he went 8-for-10 from the field. Blair Wheadon pulled in his eighth game with double-digits as he tallied up 14 points and Kyle Long lit up 13 points of his own on the scoreboard. With this win the Wolves (9-1, 2-0 GNAC) now move their winning streak to nine games since losing the season opener to Chaminade (53-69).
The second half was no trouble for the Wolves as they looked to lock up their ninth straight win. After two made free throw shots by the Argonaunts' (3-6, 0-2 PacWest) Steven Palmer and another by Wesley White, NDNU looked to make a push to the end as they were within 11 points.
Western Oregon didn't let this kill their confidence as the senior duo of Long and Wheadon worked together to take the Wolves on a 10-5 run during the last four minutes to seal the win. Long put in seven straight points with a shot from behind the arc, layup from inside the paint, and ended with a pair of free throws. Wheadon was up next as he put in three free throws and a jumper.
NDNU's Josh Pettit and Micah Dumbour did their part to get any kind of momentum for their team going but could only put in five points during the run.
NDNU did their best to keep up with WOU as they held them from going on any huge runs. However, they could not find a way to see themselves getting any closer than six points, as the first grew closer to the end. The Wolves would continue to increase their lead in the first 20 minutes, leading by as much as a 16 points after a 3-point shot by Wheadon.
WOU will now board a plane and travel up to Pullman, Wash. to get a taste of Pac-12 action against the Washington State Cougars and battle till the final buzzer to keep their streak alive. Tip off is at 4:35 p.m.
