SEATTLE – With just one more meet in the indoor season to prove they belong amongst the elite at Nationals,
Annan Applebee,
Kyle Larson and
Chris Reed all posted NCAA provisional qualifying standards at the Seattle Pacific Last Chance meet on Saturday, Feb. 27.
Annan Applebee shaved over two seconds off her previous season-best time in the 800m as she moved into ninth place in the NCAA with a time of 2:12.45. That time also won her the race by over two-and-a-half seconds.
Chris Reed and
Kyle Larson finished one-two in the mile at the SPU Last Chance meet with times of 4:10.12 and 4:10.17, respectively. This is the first provisional qualifying standard in the mile in Larson's career. That time propelled him into second place on the Wolves' all-time top 10 list and into fourth in Great Northwest Athletic Conference history. It should also earn him a top 12 spot in the nation after time adjustments. Reed did not move on any list as he posted a season-best time (adjusted) of 4:09.39 earlier this season at the UW Invite.
Western Oregon took the top three spots in the men's 800m, led by
Zach Massari's career-best time of 1:54.38. That time earned him the eighth spot in Western Oregon history and the fourth-best time in the GNAC this season.
Connor Kasler was right behind Massari, finishing in a time of 1:54.45.
Ryan Chapman followed with the ninth-best time in Western Oregon history (1:54.81) to pass Jerrett Mantalas' time of 1:54.91 (2003) and lock down the top three spots in the race.
Matt Schryvers posted a win in the weight throw with a toss of 15.56m. Schryvers, who is coming off a GNAC championship in the event, achieved the winning mark on his second throw of the meet and no one came closer than 1.95m after that.
Other event winners included
Jake Hyde in the triple jump (12.08m) and
Kyle Lane in the long jump (6.81m). Hyde also placed second in the long jump marking the second straight week these two have place one-two in the event.
The Western Oregon student-athletes with NCAA provisional standards will now await their fate to see if they will be accepted to Nationals. Results should be available on TFFRS.org on Sunday evening and teams must declare their entries by Wednesday.
