ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Western Oregon football team rallied from a 21-point deficit to take a fourth-quarter lead; however, Central Washington responded with a late touchdown to defeat the Wolves, 36-32, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest on Saturday. With the loss, WOU falls to 5-5 overall, 5-4 in league play while Central Washington improves to 6-4 overall, 6-3 in conference action.
Trailing 29-10 in the fourth-quarter, WOU would mount a furious rally, scoring 22 points in a row to take a 32-29 lead.
Royce Spencer started the WOU surge as his six-yard touchdown reception from
Ryan Bergman with 12:57 remaining cut the CWU lead to 29-17.
Lucas Gonsalves would then provide the spark the Wolves needed as he returned a CWU punt 89 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown to pull WOU to within 29-24 with 9:12 remaining.
After holding CWU to a three and out, WOU would take the lead on a four-play, 70-yard touchdown drive. On first and 10 from the 30,
Antoinne Wafer would score on a halfback pass from running back
Joe Harris as the Wolves would convert a two-point play to give WOU a 32-29 lead with 6:19 remaining.
The Wildcats would respond with an 8-play, 72-yard touchdown drive as Anthony Spain collected a 19-yard pass from Ryan Robertson to give CWU a late, 36-32 lead.
The Wolves would move into Wildcats territory on the next possession; however, Bergman's pass on fourth down fell incomplete as CWU would claim the four-point win.
Bergman went 14-for-30 with 220 yards and two touchdowns in the loss as Harris had 25 yards on nine carries to lead the Wolves.
CWU gained 132 yards on the ground as the Wildcats held a 379-271 advantage in total yards. Robertson led the CWU attack, going 23-of-29 with 240 yards and three touchdowns.
WOU recorded six sacks on the day, led by
Kraig Akins as the lineman posted 2.5 sacks.
The Wolves return to action when they close out the season on Saturday, Nov. 10, when WOU hosts Humboldt State at 1:00 p.m.
