This Weekend:
Western Oregon men's basketball team (15-7, 8-5 GNAC) heads back on the road for one game against Saint Martin's on Saturday, Feb. 11th at 7:00 p.m.
Blair Wheadon Looks To Set Another Record:
During Saturday's, 86-48, victory against Simon Fraser
Blair Wheadon had three steals, moving his career total to 205. With those three steals, Wheadon now places himself just five away from tying Grant Dykstra's Great Northwest Athletic Conference record of 210, which he set while playing for Western Washington from 2002-06.
Also on Saturday, Wheadon recorded 19 points on 5-of-7 shooting, to become just the 12th student-athlete in the history of the conference to eclipse the 1,000 point barrier in GNAC games. He currently sits 11th in GNAC history with 1,015 point in conference play, two points behind another WOU legend Kevin Tyner.
Wheadon is also 13th in GNAC history with 357 assists and 1,553 career points, and seventh in 3-points made with 231.
Wolves In The Rankings:
Wheadon currently sits in second place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with 50 steals, and fifth with 53 three-point field goals made.
Jordan Freelander and
Kyle Long hold the sixth and seventh spots in the conference with 38 and 36 steals, respectively.
Kolton Nelson currently ranks eighth in the GNAC with 19 blocked shots, while
James Gehring sits ninth in the conference with 49 offensive rebounds.
WOU Snaps its Three-Game Losing Streak:
Western Oregon's senior guard trio of
Jordan Freelander,
Blair Wheadon and
Kyle Long combined to score 52 points to help the team snap a three-game losing skid.
The Wolves snapped their losing streak by shooting 12-of-19 from behind the arc and outscoring Simon Fraser (7-13, 2-10 GNAC) 38-6 on points in the paint.
Kyle Long and
Blair Wheadon each made seven baskets and scored 19 points to lead the Wolves. Wheadon went 5-of-7 from behind the arc and dished out 10 assists for the double-double. Long matched a career-high with nine rebounds to help WOU outrebound SFU 44-31.
Jordan Freelander added 14 points and three steals.
Brian McGill contributed six points and eight rebounds coming off the bench to help Western Oregon outscore Simon Fraser 17-1 in bench points.
WOU ended the first half on an 8-0 run, which included a 3-pointer by Freelander at the buzzer. The Wolves would score the first eight points of the second half to increase their lead by 19 (40-21) as they capped off a 16-0 with a 3-pointer from Long. The 38 point final margin of victory was the Wolves' largest lead of the game.
A Look At The Saint Martin's Saints:
Tip Off: 7:00 p.m.
Current Record: 8-14, 4-9 GNAC
Last Five: 0-5
Western Oregon looks to continue their success from their win against Simon Fraser on Saturday against a Saint Martin Saint's team that has not won their last five games since upsetting the Wolves, 74-65, and snapping their nine-game win streak earlier this season.
The Saints on the other hand are looking to bounce back after losing, 70-67, to Western Washington on Saturday (Feb. 4th), and snap their current five game skid.
When the Saints visited Monmouth, Ore. on Jan 14th, Western Oregon was riding a nine-game win streak, but Saint Martin's outscored them 30-9 down the stretch. Jeremy Green had 18 points and 14 rebounds for the Saints that evening.
Blair Wheadon led the Wolves with 20 points and four steals. Western Oregon also got 12 points from
Kolton Nelson and 10 from
Kyle Long.
Western Oregon led much of the opening half and took a 37-30 lead into halftime. WOU would extend its lead to as many as 12 in the second period. However, a scoring drought would prove to be the Wolves' downfall. After Long hit a jumper for WOU with 9:08 left, the Wolves went cold and would not hit another bucket for over eight minutes.
Meanwhile, the Saints fought back and tied the game at 60-60 on a 3-pointer by Will Bond. Green would follow up with a layup and a foul shot, and Bond would add in a 3-pointer to increase the Saints lead to six. They would hit 6-of-7 free throws in the final 45 seconds to preserve the win.
Last season SMU swept WOU as they won 85-54 in Lacey, and 89-68 in Monmouth. The last time the Wolves swept the Saints was during the 2009-10 season. WOU won 80-77 in overtime in Lacey and 59-56 at home.
Saint Martin's currently lead Western Oregon by one game with an all-time record of 28-27.
