MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon football team held a lead throughout most of the game; however, Central Washington rallied late for a 21-14 overtime victory in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, WOU falls to 0-3 on the season, 0-2 in league play, while CWU improves to 2-1 overall, 2-0 in conference play.
The overtime contest marked the first for WOU since 2004 when the Wolves defeated Western Washington, 52-49, in four overtimes.
WOU had more offensive yards then CWU, but it would not be enough to take a victory. Finishing with 75-plays for 459-yards, they would average better than the Wildcats with 83-plays for 390-yards.
Haynes led the WOU rushing attack with 92-yards on 17 carries as VonAppen threw for 249-yards, going 15-of-36 with two touchdowns.
Defense ruled the day as the teams combined to force nine turnovers, including seven interceptions. WOU would cause seven total pass break-ups, four interceptions totaling 61-yards, and seven tackles for a loss totaling 29-yards.
Number three,
Bryce Peila had two interceptions to lead the Wolves defense.
Peila set a GNAC record for most career interception return yards.
Peila is only three interceptions short, standing at 18, of tying the conference record for most career interceptions.
Peila would end the game with nine total tackles, seven solos.
Another major defensive player today was number 16,
Coulter Mastenbroek. Additionally, would return his single interception for the day back 44-yards. Further, of his eight tackles, six where solo, with a sac for five-yards, and two tackles for a loss combined of seven yards.
After a scoreless first quarter, WOU grabbed the lead on a four-play, 80-yard drive capped off when
Cody VonAppen found
Tyrell Williams wide open for a 56-yard touchdown. The Wolves extended the lead to 14-0 when
Kenneth Haynes scored on an 11-yard screen pass early in the third quarter.
The score remained the same until late in the third as CWU began to make its push. Robert Okeo-Orr scored on an 11-yard pass from Ryan Robertson with 41 seconds left in the quarter to make the score 14-7 heading into the fourth.
The Wildcats finally drew even with 4:13 remaining in the contest as Johri Fogerson capped off a five play, 34-yard drive with a nine-yard touchdown run to make the score 14-14.
With Western Oregon unable to connect on a 58-yard field goal with 10 seconds left, the game went into overtime as the Wolves won the toss and elected to play defense on the opening possession.
Central Washington opened the extra frame with a nine-play drive as Fogerson scored his second rushing touchdown of the game to give the Wildcats a 21-14 advantage.
On the ensuing drive, the CWU defense held WOU to a four-and-out as the Wildcats claimed the narrow victory.
Fogerson led all rushers with 123-yards on 22 carries as Robertson threw for 220-yards, completing 24-of-37 passes with one touchdown and four interceptions.
Western Oregon will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 22, as the Wolves host Simon Fraser at 1:00 p.m.
