MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon football team looks to make it two wins in a row as the Wolves travel to Azusa, Calif., to face Azusa Pacific University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 6:00 p.m.
The Wolves enter the week with a mark of 1-3 overall, 1-2 in conference play, after WOU rallied to defeat Simon Fraser, 20-16, last week. VonAppen led the WOU attack as the senior quarterback accounted for all three Wolves touchdowns. In addition to a rushing touchdown, VonAppen went 19-of-32 through the air with 253 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.
Scotland Foss' interception in the endzone with 24 seconds remaining sealed the win for the Wolves as the senior linebacker was named GNAC Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts against the Clan.
VonAppen leads the WOU attack as he ranks second in the league in total offense at 262.8 yards per game. As a team, WOU ranks fourth in the league in total offense at 357.5 yards per contest while scoring at a clip of 16.0 points per game. Senior
Kenneth Haynes leads the team in rushing as he ranks seventh in the league at 52.8 yards per contest while
Royce Spencer (67.5) and
Tyrell Williams (64.2) rank fourth and fifth in the conference in receiving yards per game.
The WOU defense enters the week fifth in the GNAC in total defense, giving up 405.8 yards per game while ranking fourth in scoring defense at 27.2 points per contest.
Bryce Peila continues to make his mark on the defensive side of the ball, leading the league at 9.2 tackles per game while ranking second in the conference with three interceptions.
APU is looking for its first victory of the season after falling to Central Washington, 41-17, last week. The Cougars, in their first year competing at the NCAA Division II level, rank sixth in the league in scoring offense at 14.8 points per game and sixth in scoring defense at 37.0 points per contest.
Running back Terrell Watson leads a powerful rushing attack as he ranks third in the league with 104.8 rushing yards per game. As a team, the Cougars rank third in the league with 171.0 yards per game.
WOU leads the all-time series, 3-1, as the Wolves defeated APU in the last meeting between the squads, 38-17, in 2010 in Monmouth.
Following the contest with the Cougars, WOU will travel to Arcata, Calif., to face No. 10 Humboldt State on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 6:00 p.m.
