MONMOUTH, Ore. – Winners of two straight, the Western Oregon football team returns to action this week as the Wolves host Azusa Pacific at McArthur Field in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 1:00 p.m.
WOU enters the week with a record of 2-2 overall, 2-1 in conference play, after the Wolves defeated Simon Fraser, 30-9. The win created a four-team logjam atop the GNAC standings as WOU joined Azusa Pacific, Central Washington and the Clan with identical league records.
The defense was the key in the win over the Clan as WOU held one of the league's top offenses without a touchdown. Leading the defensive unit was GNAC Defensive Player of the Week
Kraig Akins, who totaled 11 tackles, with three going for a loss including two sacks.
Offensively against the Clan, quarterback
Ryan Bergman completed 14-of-33 passes for 234 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions, while running back
Joe Harris eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark and scored a pair of touchdowns.
The Wolves enter the week second in the league in scoring offense at 25.5 points per game while ranking third in the GNAC with 346.5 yards of total offense per game. Bergman leads the offensive attack as the signal-caller ranks second in the conference with 263.8 yards of total offense per contest.
Defensively, WOU ranks fourth in the conference allowing 26.0 points per contest and 400.5 yards per game.
Azusa Pacific enters this week's contest with an identical record of 2-2 overall, 2-1 in league action after the Cougars dropped a low-scoring affair, 7-3, to Central Washington last week. APU features one of the top defensive units in the league as the Cougars are allowing only 16.8 points per contest and 324.5 yards per game.
Offensively, APU is buoyed by a strong rushing attack as junior running back Terrell Watson leads the league, averaging 133.5 yards per game. Watson has scored six touchdowns on the season and leads an offense that ranks fourth in the league at 21.0 points per game.
WOU continues to lead the all-time series against APU, 4-2, after the programs split a pair of contests last season. In a pair of low scoring games, WOU won at APU, 20-7, before the Cougars picked up a victory at McArthur Field, 19-3.
Tickets to the home opener are $15 for reserved and $12 for adult general admission. Senior and non-WOU student general admission is $10 and WOU students are admitted for free with a valid student identification card. For tickets, fans can purchase online at www.wouwolves.com/tickets or by calling 503-838-8051.
The game can also be seen on television in the Willamette Valley with KWVT providing the broadcast. For a complete rundown of channel listings, check www.kvtsalem.com. All WOU football contest can be heard on 1340 KLOO AM – Corvallis with Mark Gilman proving the play-by-play.
