GLENDORA, Calif. – The Western Oregon University football team had its three-game win streak snapped at Azusa Pacific University Saturday, 38-28. The Cougars remain atop the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with the win.
Azusa Pacific (7-2, 7-1 GNAC), which is receiving votes in the national poll, held Western Oregon to 79 yards on the ground in the win. APU held off the Wolves behind 197 rushing yards. The Cougars finished with 393 yards of offense to WOU's 323.
Western Oregon entered the game with a chance to tie Azusa Pacific for first place in the conference, but with the win the Cougars now own a game lead over Central Washington and a two-game cushion over WOU in the GNAC standings.
Azusa Pacific's Terrel Watson came into the contest as the leader rusher in the conference and proved why Saturday. He ran for 173 yards on 30 carries with three touchdowns. Watson finished with 206 all-purpose yards. He ran for 102 yards in the first meeting with WOU this season.
Dasmen Stewart completed 18 of his 31 pass attempts for 196 yards. He threw a touchdown and an interception. Stewart also ran for 22 yards and a touchdown. Tarik Myles caught eight passes for 98 yards.
The Cougars built a 10-0 lead after the first quarter with a five-yard Kyle Dravis touchdown catch on their first possession and a 31-yard field goal at the 1:34 mark.
Lucas Gonsalves reeled in a 22-yard reception with 10:21 left in the second quarter to cut the lead to 10-7. Stewart completed a six-play 63-yard drive midway through the quarter with a two-yard run.
Azusa Pacific opened the second half with his first touchdown, a 36-yard run, increasing the lead to 24-7. On the Wolves' next possession, Gonsalves made another touchdown catch from just a yard away. Watson completed the scoring in the quarter with a 15-yard run.
Devin Wells opened the fourth quarter with a 63-yard interception return to the Azusa Pacific 12-yard line. On the next play,
Devauntae Hoffman ran in a 12-yard score, cutting the lead to 31-21. Watson and the Cougars answered with a 19-yard touchdown run.
Robert Savoy completed the scoring with a 22-yard catch with 6:50 remaining in regulation.
The Wolves' (5-4, 5-3)
Ryan Bergman finished 24-of-39 with three touchdown passes and an interception. Gonsalves caught six passes for 101 yards. Hoffman finished with 98 rushing yards on 14 carries.
Shane Kuenzi led all players with 14 tackles. He also had a fumble recovery and a pass breakup.
Kraig Akins had eight tackles with a fumble recovery. Tyler Thornton led APU with 12 tackles and a fumble recovery. The Cougars had five sacks as a team.
Western Oregon welcomes Central Washington (6-3, 6-2) Nov. 9 for a 1 p.m. kickoff. The Wildcats won the first meeting in Ellensburg, Wash., 20-7, on Sept. 14. It will be Senior Day for WOU. Fans are encouraged to wear black for a Blackout at McArthur Field.
