MONMOUTH, Ore.—The Western Oregon University football team could not have honored their seniors on a special day better than the way it Saturday. The Wolves knocked off Central Washington University, 32-26, in the final home game of the season.
Western Oregon (6-4, 6-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) moves into a tie with CWU for second place in the conference standings. The Wolves also capped off the 2013 home schedule with a 4-1 record. The victory was only the second in the last 20 matchups against Central Washington.
The Wolves amassed 580 yards of offense, behind 405 through the air from
Ryan Bergman. The junior completed 21 of his 39 attempts with four touchdowns and an interception.
Antoinne Wafer and
Dustin Hurd both had 124 receiving yards.
Joe Harris ran for 141 yards.
After a CWU field goal opened the scoring, Hurd reeled in a Bergman pass for a 78-yard score. Twenty-six seconds before halftime,
Michael Reeve caught a seven-yard pass from Bergman to give Western Oregon a 12-3 at halftime.
A Jordan Todd four-yard scamper cut the lead to 12-10 just into the second half. Eight minutes later, Wafer finished off a 61-yard pass play with a touchdown. The Wildcats' Stan Langlow then returned a blocked extra point 98 yards for a defensive two-point conversion.
After the teams combined for 30 points through the first three quarters, a total of 28 points were scored in the final quarter.
Tyrell Williams opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 14-yard touchdown catch. Jake Nelson then connected with Greg Logan for a 30-yard score with 5:13 left in regulation.
Leading 24-19 with 1:02 left in the game,
AJ Hull silenced a CWU threat with a 25-yard interception return for a touchdown. A Nelson to DJ Richardson 13-yard connection ended the scoring with 17 seconds remaining in the game.
Nelson finished 23-of-36 with three interceptions and two touchdown passes. Logan caught four passes for 94 yards. Todd gained 53 yards on the ground.
The CWU (6-4, 6-3 GNAC) defense forced a trio of Wolves' fumbles. JB Torsy led the Wildcats with nine tackles. Western Oregon's
Shane Kuenzi led all players with 12 tackles.
The Wildcats have a 33-18 advantage over Western Oregon all-time. the Wolves snapped a four-game skid to CWU. The series dates back to a 7-0 Wildcat win over Oregon Normal on Oct. 17, 1936.
The Wolves play their final game of the regular season next Saturday. Western Oregon travels to Humboldt State (0-10, 0-9) for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
