MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon University men's basketball team capped off its regular season with an upset win over Western Washington University Saturday, 88-85.
The Wolves (17-11, 10-8 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) reached 10 wins in GNAC play for only the fourth time in program history, and only the second time in the past nine years, after beating the seventh-ranked team in the NCAA Div. II West Region. WOU avenged a 67-66 last second loss at then-ranked No. 5 Western Washington earlier this season. Western Oregon enters the GNAC tournament winners of seven of its last nine games.
Andy Avgi and
Rodney Webster both scored 20 points in the win. On Senior Day, Webster finished with 25 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field, while Avgi made five of his 10 shots and had 20 points. The two combined for 19-of-21 shooting from the free throw line, with Avgi making all 10 of his attempts.
Marwan Sarhan added 15 points off of the bench. Sarhan and
Adam Hastings both grabbed seven rebounds.
Western Washington outshot the Wolves, 45 percent to 42 percent, and outrebounded WOU, 44-41. The Wolves did score 30 points on the free throw line, making 30-of-37, while the Vikings were 12-for-19. Western Oregon turned 15 offensive rebounds into 21 second chance points. It also committed 10 turnovers to WWU's 14.
The back-and-forth game featured 16 lead changes and eight ties. The teams combined for 3-of-15 shooting from the field to start the game. Western Washington's largest lead of the first half was three points. A three-point play by Webster with 48 seconds left in the first half gave WOU's its largest advantage, 42-33. The Wolves had a 43-37 lead at halftime.
Western Oregon extended the margin to 12 points, the largest of the game, three minutes into the second half. Shortly after, a 13-2 run by WWU evened the score at 65 midway through the second half. Back-to-back three-pointers gave the Vikings their largest lead of the game, 83-78, with 2:54 remaining in regulation. Over the next two minutes, the Wolves made a decisive 9-1 run. A Richard Woodworth three-point attempt as time expired was too strong and WOU prevailed.
The Vikings' (19-7, 13-5 GNAC) Woodworth finished with 24 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field. Jeffrey Parker added 14 points and Joey Schreiber scored 13. Austin Bragg had a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds. He also had three blocks. Woodworth dished out a game-high seven assists and made three steals.
Western Oregon snapped a four-game skid to the Vikings. Thirteen of the last 18 meetings between the programs have been decided by single digits.
The Wolves will be the fifth-seed in the GNAC Championships and open against fourth-seeded Alaska-Anchorage (17-12, 10-8). The game will tipoff Wednesday at 2:15 p.m., in Lacey, Wash., on the campus of Saint Martin's University. Live video and stats will be on WOUWolves.com.
