Wolves compete in Bay Area, McMinnville

Western Oregon University's spread out over Oregon and California this past weekend as the Wolves competed in three different events – the Stanford Invitational, the San Francisco State Distance Carnival and the Jenn Boyman Invitational hosted by Linfield College.

A total of 10 NCAA Provisional standards were met in the Bay Area by the WOU male runners, female runners and one female field athlete. On the women's side, Emmi Collier earned a qualifying mark in the shot put with an effort of 46 feet, 2 ½ inches (14.08 meters) in a tough field at Stanford on Friday and again surpassed the desired mark in a winning performance at the SF State Distance Carnival on Saturday at 45 feet, 5 ¾ inches (13.86m). In the running events, Suzanne Van De Grift ran a time of 2:12.89 in the 800 meters and Stephanie Stuckey ran a 4:30.59 in the 1500m at SF State.

On the men's side, Josh Dempsey and Josh Hanna ran great in both 800m races over the weekend. The duo finished two-three at the Distance Carnival with provisional times of 1:49.84 and 1:50.11 respectively. At Stanford, they faced some of the best West Coast runners from the Division I ranks and still beat qualifying times. In Palo Alto on Friday, David Ribich and Sam Naffziger were solid in a loaded 1500-meter meet. Ribich ran the third best time in his race section, but second-best time in WOU history with a time of 3:48.82 while Naffziger beat his personal best by two seconds with a time of 3:49.87.

Posting winning times and marks were Cody Warner in the 200m at the Distance Carnival (21.62), Wesley Gray in the triple jump at SFSU (47 feet, 8 ½ inches) and David Cornish at the meet in Linfield in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:02.87.

The Wolves return home for the first of two meets at McArthur Stadium. Western Oregon hosts the John Knight Twillight on Friday, April 8 beginning at 1 p.m. with the hammer event.
