SEATTLE, Wash.—Opening the season at the University of Washington's Indoor Preview, five Western Oregon University track & field indoor school records fell on Saturday.
David Ribich and
Suzanne Van De Grift tackled school records in the 1,000-meter run,
Dustin Nading and
Nicole Maurmann defeated school marks in the 3,000 and
Olivia Woods established a new record in the 600 to highlight the action at the Dempsey Indoor.
Taking second overall behind professional Drew Windle,
David Ribich shattered the school mark in the 1,000-meter run with a 2:21.38. Ribich finished .43 back of the Brooks'-backed pro to cut more than seven full seconds off the school record formerly held by Nading (2:28.58).
In the women's 1,000, Van De Grift toppled her own school record with a 2:54.23 for more than a three-second improvement over her 2017 time (2:57.75).
Woods shaved more than a full second off the 600 time with a 1:35.23 to replace former Wolf Summer Morris' 1:36.41 at the top of the school's all-time performance list. In the men's 600, A.J. Holberg snipped .03 off his 2017 best time in the event with a 1:20.56. Holmberg holds the No. 2 time in school history in the event, trailing only Badane Sultessa's 2016 mark of 1:19.95.
Nading, meanwhile, topped Ribich's school record in the 3,000 with a time of 8:11.67. Placing sixth overall, Nading clipped two seconds off the former record and nabbed an NCAA provisional qualifier in the process. Nading crossed the line a mere five seconds shy of the 8:06.36 automatic qualifier standard to nationals. In addition, the time moved Nading into the No. 4 position on the all-time GNAC performance list.
Flirting with the NCAA II Indoor provisional mark in the long jump,
Alani Troutman landed with a 22-9 1/4 (6.94m) for fourth place overall. Troutman landed shy of the provisional distance of 23-2 3/4 and seven inches shy of his 2017 best that rests as the second best mark in school history.
Moving to the throwing events,
Mariah Gronbach entered the school's all-time indoor list at No. 8 with a 48-9 1/2 (14.87m).
Sylvia Dean, meanwhile, moves into the No. 10 position with a 47-11 1/4 (14.61m)
Missing his indoor personal record by .01,
Devon Fortier covered the distance in 7.09 to lead the sprinting corps. In the 400,
Aaron Whitaker and
Megan Rose opened the indoor season in respectable fashion with Whitaker posting a 49.67 for fifth place while Rose placed 14th with a 59.33. Both times landed around one second shy of their career-best indoor marks.
"It was a great day out there. I was especially pleased with how the team worked together with their comradery. They showed exuberance all, not just for their own events but for all of their teammates," WOU head coach
Mike Johnson said. "We broke five rally good school records on the track and our throwers had an outstanding mete with tons of personal records—some of which were by 1-2 meters."
WOU will return to the Dempsey Indoor next week for the UW Invitational held on Jan. 26-27.
