SEATTLE, Wash.—Returning to venue where they opened their indoor season two weeks ago, the Western Oregon University track & field teams combined to tally seven NCAA DII Indoor National Championship qualifying marks at the UW Invitational.
Senior
David Ribich was a part of two auto qualifiers after anchoring the men's distance medley relay on Friday and returning with a sub-4 minute mile on Saturday. Ribich shattered his own record with a time of 3:58.88 to place third overall behind Nike's Yomif Kejalcha (3:56.95) and Northern Arizona's Andy Trouard (3:58.01).
The result moves Ribich into the No. 2-ranking in NCAA DII history according to USTFCCCA and the fastest time by a NCAA DII runner in over 30 years. Kip Cheruiyot, competing for Mount St. Mary's, established the NCAA DII record with a 3:56.74 during the 1986 season.
Dustin Nading,
Aaron Whitaker and
AJ Holmberg joined Ribich to win the event title in the distance medley with a time of 9:47.56 seconds. WOU, the defending NCAA DII national champions in the event, finished with more than a three-second spread over runner-up Stanford University (9:51.26) as Pac 12 programs took the next three positions
The women's relay turned in a school record time of 11:48.58 for an eighth-place result.
Suzanne Van De Grift,
Megan Rose,
Olivia Woods and
Kennedy Rufener combined to tour the track in time for a provisional qualifier but a shade under the former school record of 11:50.03 that the same group turned in a year ago.
Individually, Nading, Woods and Van De Grift clocked provisional qualifiers in their respective events. Nading tackled the early field in the men's mile with a time of 4:04.50 while Woods and Van De Grift placed 11th and 17th in the 800-meter run with times of 2:10.62 and 2:11.80.
Nading's time cut .72 off his career best in the event and remains No. 2 all-time in school history with a 4:02.30 holding as the school indoor record. Van De Grift's time fell shy of her own school record of 2:09.10. Moving to the women's 3,000, Rufener turned in a 9:56.05 to dip under the 9:59.49 provisional barrier.
The Wolves will return to Seattle next week by competing at the Husky Classic/Husky Open at the Dempsey Indoor on Feb. 10-11. WOU will then head to the GNAC Indoor Track & Field Championships held at Jacksons Track in Nampa, Idaho on Feb. 16-17.
