Ribich, Rufener shatter school records at Husky Classic

>>> COMPLETE RESULTS

SEATTLE—
Chopping more than 20 seconds off the school records in their respective races, David Ribich and Kennedy Rufener highlighted Western Oregon University track & field action at the Husky Classic on Feb. 9-10.

Running in the elite section of the 3,000, Ribich placed fourth overall with a time of 7:50.81. The time not only slashed more than 20 seconds off the school record, but established a new all-time NCAA DII mark as Ribich finished more than six seconds faster than Adams State's Sydney Gibabuday, who set the previous all-time best last year with a 7:56.88, according to USTFCCCA.

Rufener, meanwhile, shattered her own school record in the 5,000-meter run. Rufener toured the Demspey track in 16:53.96 to clip more than 27 seconds off of her former mark. The time also provided Rufener with an NCAA DII provisional qualifier and is currently the No. 10 mark in the country.

Competing in the women's 800, Olivia Woods took fourth in her section and 21st place overall with a 2:11.38 while teammate Megan Rose crossed the line eighth in the section with a 2:12.37 for 30th place. Both times met NCAA provisional qualifying standard while Rose's mark established a new indoor career best.

Moving up the the mile, Suzanne Van De Grift finished strides away from breaking one of the oldest school records in the WOU books. Van De Grift posted a time of 4:48.95 to fall shy of the 1988 mark of 4:48.06 set by Selina Stanton. As of Saturday afternoon, Van De Grift holds the No 6 time in NCAA DII.

Closing out the competition the women's 1,600-meter relay team narrowly missed the school mark and an NCAA provisional qualifier. The quartet of Grayson Burke, Rose, Van De Grift and Woods completed the circuits in 3:51.84 for 11th place overall. The school record stands at 3:51.18 while the provisional barrier is set at 3:51.19.

The Wolves will continue its weekend of competition at the Husky Open on Sunday, Feb. 11.
