NAMPA, Idaho—Backing up her GNAC-leading time in the 5,000-meter run, Western Oregon's
Kennedy Rufener took home the conference title in the event by more than seven seconds with a time of 17:18.64 to highlight the first day of action at the GNAC Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday.
Rufener recently set the school record and is provisionally qualified for the NCAA DII National Championships with a with a 16:53.96. With the win, Rufener becomes the first WOU woman to claim an individual title at the GNAC Indoor Championships in an event over 200 meters.
Alexa Shindruk took second with a 17:26.33 while Alaska Anchorage's Emmanuelah Chelimo placed third with a 17:34.13.
Closing out the events on the track, the WOU men's distance medley relay team placed second overall with a time 10:13.68 to score eight points in the standings. The Wolves were edged by Simon Fraser's 10:08.40 while Central Washington was a distant third at 10:22.89. The women's distance medley matched the result with a runner-up finish of their own by completing the segments in 11:52.14. Simon Fraser won the event handily with a 11:37.88 while the Wolves beat Alaska Anchorage to the line by a stride as the Seawolves were clocked in 11:52.56
Scoring five points in the long jump,
Alani Troutman placed fourth overall with a mark of 22-7 3/4 (6.90m). Troutman matched his ranking entering the meet and nearly matches his season-best distance with the landing.
With four runners successfully navigating the prelims in the men's 800, the Wolves will carry half of the field into Saturday's event.
David Ribich cruised to victory in the opening heat with a 1:54.35 while
Neal Cranston made it a 1-2 WOU finish after crossing the line in 1:56.01.
Curt Knott and
Thomas Normandeau went 3-4 in the second section but advanced via times as Knott finished with a 1:55.43 to Normandeau's 1:55.46.
Cranston and Knott and Normandeau both posted indoor career bests in the race. Western Washington's Kyler Sager topped the field in the second section with a 1:54.63.
In the women's 800, both
Olivia Woods and
Megan Rose placed second in their heats to stamp places in Saturday's finale. Woods covered the track in an indoor career best time of 2:09.10 while Rose's 2:13.59 fell just shy of her all-time indoor mark of 2:13.18.
Aaron Whitaker safely moved on to finals in the men's 400-meter dash with a season-best time of 49.33. Whitaker was entered in the meet with the No. 6 time at 49.67 but owns an indoor career best of 48.53. Running mate
AJ Holmberg placed 10th overall with a 50.33.
Winning her heat,
Grayson Burke posted a career best in the women's 400 to squeak into the finals on Saturday. Burke turned in a 58.23 for the eighth and final qualifier, edging Seattle Pacific's Grace Bley by .02 for the final spot. The time also places Burke at No. 4 on WOU's all-time indoor performance list in the event. Cutting more than a half of a second off her season best,
Nicole Niskanen placed 19th overall in the 400 with a 1:01.74.
In the short sprints,
Devon Fortier narrowly missed out on advancement by taking ninth in the 60-meter dash. Fortier dipped under his career best with a 7.06 but was edged out for the eighth and final qualifier on a photo finish, 7.056 to 7.057. Fellow sprinters
Cody Warner and
Codi Blodgett took 10th and 12th place, respectively, with times of 7.07 and 7.10.
In the 200, both Fortier and Blodgett outperformed their pre-race seeding. Fortier clocked a career-best 22.21 to place 10th overall, just .02 off the final qualifier. The time also moves Fortier into No. 9 on WOU's al-time indoor performance list. Blodgett placed 17th overall after a No. 21 ranking to start the day.
In the men's weight throw,
Nick Sieber placed 14th with a47-5 (14.45m) while
Logan Barker took 17th with a 43-4 1/4 (13.21m).
