SEATTLE—In a last chance to reach an NCAA Indoor standard or tune-up before the championships, several Western Oregon University track & field athletes in season or career bests while competing at the SPU Last Chance Qualifier on Saturday.
Taking second place,
Justin Crosswhite broke through with a 4:08.79 in the mile to reach the provisional standard of 4:11.67, but remains on the outside looking in as the mark rests at No. 30 in all of NCAA DII. Crosswhite's time represented a six-second personal record and moves the sophomore into the No. 4 slot on WOU's all-time performance list and No. 10 on the GNAC's all-time list.Teammate
Stephen Fey placed seventh with a 4:15.44 for a four-second career best.
In the women's 3,000,
Kennedy Rufener shattered her own school record once again with a 9:46.27. The time lops off a full nine seconds off her previous best of 9:56.05 set earlier this season at the UW Invitational. Rufener's time sits at No. 17 on NCAA DII performance list
In the throws,
Mariah Gronbach uncorked a two-foot personal best with a toss of 54-10 1/4 (16.72m). The distance fell just off the DII provisional barrier (16.77m), but landed as the No. 2 mark in school history behind Kristin Hepler's school record of 58-2 1/2 from the 2004 season.
Other seasonal bests included
Olivia Woods in the 400 (57.77) and
Nicole Maurmann in the mile with a provisional qualifier of 4:58.94.
