Meet Schedule - Day 1 Results - Day 2 Start Lists - Live Results
MONMOUTH, Ore.—In addition to crowning a meet champion in the long jump, Western Oregon University scored in five events while a dozen runners advanced to Saturday's finals to highlight the first day of action at the GNAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship, held at McArthur Field on Friday.
Alani Troutman, the GNAC leader in the event, landed well shy of his season-best mark but edged Northwest Nazarene's Elijah Castro, 22-5 (6.83m) to 22-4 1/2 (6.82m) for the event win in the long jump.
Boosted by Troutman's 10 points, the WOU men tallied 13 total points on the first day to enter Saturday's finale in seventh place. Also in seventh place, the Western Oregon women scored 11 points on the opening day of competition.
WOU's Jacob Collins improved five positions in the pre-meet seeding to secure a 7th-place finish in the pole vault. Nearly matching a season best, Collins cleared 13-6 1/2 (4.13m) in the vault for two additional team points.
Chris Steffey provided the final point for the WOU men with an eighth-place result in the discus after unleashing a 154-10 (47.19m).
Freshman Darian Wilson posted WOU's strongest finish on the women's side with a 3rd-place result in the long jump after a mark of 18-0 1/2 (5.50m) to reach podium status. Wilson also placed fifth in the heptathlon on May 1 for four addition team points.
Shattering her career best in the discus, Moana Gioanotti registered the final point for the WOU women's team. Gronbach unleashed a 132-4 (40.33m) for more than a six-foot personal improvement and an eighth-place result.
The 800-meter run provided nine of the Wolves' 12 finals advancements, including seven in the men's races alone. Wolf runners won all three sections of the prelims with AJ Holmberg setting the tone with a win in the opener with a 1:54.35. David Ribich led a 1-2-3 finish in the second section by escorting Curt Knott and Neal Cranston to qualifying times while Dustin Nading, Josh Dempsey and Thomas Normandeau replicated the feat with a 1-2-3 sweep in the final section.
Nading's time of 1:52.69 was established as the fastest of the day.
In the women's 800, Olivia Woods and Megan Rose successfully navigated the prelim races with Woods recording the No. 3 time at 2:09.84 and Rose the No. 5 result at 2:11.99 to advance to Saturday's finals.
In a pair of 400-meter distances, Grayson Burke moved on to tomorrow's finals with a 57.85 in the flat version of the spring while Sara Madden covered the same distance, but with hurdles at 1:03.47. Burke's time was the No. 6 fastest of the day while Madden will be the No. 5 qualifier.
Codi Blodgett and Cody Warner recorded WOU's lone advancing times in the short sprints with Blodgett running an 11.00 in the 100-meter dash and Warner a 21.82 in the 200.
Saturday's action will begin at 10 a.m. at McArthur Field with the men's hammer competition. The 400-meter relays will start action on the track at 12 p.m.
