Nighthawks fend off two rallies to sweep Wolves

NAMPA, Idaho – The Western Oregon volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (22-25, 17-25, 24-26) loss on Saturday night to the Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks in the first of two meetings between the teams in 2019.

Despite going down in straight sets, Western Oregon (3-14, 1-9 GNAC) came within three points in two of the games to provide a tight contest with Northwest Nazarene (9-8, 5-5 GNAC).

The Wolves made a huge run in the first set after NNU attempted to put the game away early. Trailing 21-11, Western out-scored the Nighthawks 11-3 over the next 14 points to pull within two, but a block from Tayler Markland and Abbey Blum sealed the set for the home team.

Set three would play closer the whole way, with no more than four points separating the teams in the game. WOU held a four-point lead at 19-15 with their best chance to pick up a game, but could not hold the late lead as Markland led a late run.

Delaney Smith had seven kills and a team-high six blocks for her 10.5 points Saturday night. She was one of four Wolves to register at least seven kills in the game and was in on all but one of WOU's seven team blocks.

Allyson Crisp had a match-high 10 kills on 20 attacks, adding on a block and a dig.

After playing in just one set on Thursday, Aubrey Stanton returned to full duties with 27 assists over the three sets. She added on two aces and five digs.

Western Oregon continues their road trip next week when they visit Simon Fraser Thursday, Oct. 24, and Western Washington Saturday, Oct. 26. Both matches are set for a 7 p.m. PDT first serve.
