Volleyball pushes Simon Fraser to four as DeCarli tallies 13 kills

BURNABY, B.C. – The Western Oregon University volleyball team battled back from down two sets to win the third set before Simon Fraser was able to pull away in the fourth for the 3-1 (25-19, 25-16, 23-25, 25-18) Great Northwest Athletic Conference victory Thursday night.

Sianna DeCarli paced the offense with 13 kills and also added six digs. Makenzie York added nine kills and a trio of players recorded six kills in Lauren Smith, Allyson Crisp and Krista Omlid. Emily West dished out a season-high 26 assists, Allie Spear and Juliana Cameron each spun in two service aces and then Omlid, Delaney Smith and DeCarli all tied for the team lead in blocks with two apiece. Spear and Mikayla Seiler led the back row with Spear collecting 14 digs and Seiler with 13.

Simon Fraser (12-7, 8-3 GNAC) opened up the first set on a 6-0 run. Trailing 19-11, WOU (3-15, 1-10 GNAC) went on a big run to get back in the set with a York kill starting a 7-0 run. Spear added a service ace, York another kill, a kill from Lauren Smith and then after kills from York and Crisp the Wolves were right back in the set down just 19-18. The Clan responded going on a 6-1 run over the remainder of the set to take the opening set at 25-19.

The second set had a similar start to it with Simon Fraser going on a 6-0 run. WOU fought back to within four on a couple of occasions, but the Clan kept the momentum going taking the set 25-16.

After trailing early in the third, the Wolves came back to take the lead at 10-9 with a pair of kills by DeCarli around an error by the Clan. A service ace by Spear and a kill by Lauren Smith tied the set back up at 16. Down 20-17, WOU kept pushing working back to tie the set at 20 on a kill by Crisp and then going ahead 21-20 on a kill by DeCarli. With the set even at 23, WOU recorded the final two points with a kill by DeCarli and then a service ace by Delaney Smith helped the Wolves grab the set at 25-23 to push the match to a fourth set.

Following another early start by Simon Fraser in the fourth, WOU came back to within two at 12-10 on a kill by Delaney Smith and then with two at 13-11 on an attack error. Still within three at 16-13 on a kill by Omlid, Simon Fraser went on a 5-1 run to open up a 21-14 lead. Following a pair of kills by Delaney Smith and DeCarli, the Clan closed the set on a 4-2 run to take the fourth 25-18 and take the match at 3-1.

WOU posted 45 kills to 24 errors in 144 chances to hit .146, while Simon Fraser tallied 58 kills to 13 errors in 135 chances to hit .333. Kirsten Pinkney led the way for Simon Fraser with 19 kills, while two others reached double-figures with Tamara Clarke at 13 and Betsie de Beer with 10. Julia Tays led the offense with 41 assists, Kalyn Hartmann had four blocks and de Beer added 18 digs.

WOU will conclude their four-match road swing Saturday night in Bellingham against Western Washington starting at 7 p.m. The sixth-ranked Vikings moved to 18-1 overall and 10-1 in GNAC play following a sweep of Concordia Thursday night.
