#13 Alaska Anchorage powers past women’s basketball Saturday night

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The nationally-ranked Alaska Anchorage SeaWolves proved worthy of their No. 13 mark as they used solid shooting, along with big advantages on points off turnovers and points in the paint to defeat the Western Oregon University women's basketball team 73-41 Saturday night in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action.

WOU (2-6, 0-2 GNAC) did what they could to slow down the high-powered SeaWolves, but Alaska Anchorage (9-1, 2-0 GNAC) went 26-54 (48) from the field, added nine three-pointers and went just 12-21 (57) at the foul line. UAA used a plus-14 advantage in both points off turnovers (19-5) and points in the paint (26-12) to claim the victory.

Nine players scored for the Wolves led by nine points from Keyonna Jones. Rachel Rogers added seven and both Shariah Green and Tresai McCarver added six points apiece. Rogers grabbed a team-high six rebounds, Cali McClave had three steals and Amber Winkler continued her block party sending back three more shots. WOU went 15-49 (31) from the field, 3-17 (18) from three and 8-12 (67) at the foul line.

After Alaska Anchorage split a pair of free throws, Green gave WOU the lead nearly a minute in hitting a layup off an assist by Jones. Alaska Anchorage then went on a 7-0 run before Rogers snapped the stretch with a foul shot with 4:19 to go in the opening quarter. Jones and McCarver also added points the remainder of the first frame as the SeaWolves took a 20-6 lead into the second quarter.

Green, Alexis Wright and Rogers had points early in the second quarter, but UAA kept pushing as they held a 20-14 edge in the second frame to take a 40-20 lead into halftime.

Winkler, Green, Meadow Aragon and Jones all tallied baskets in the third quarter to keep things close as the SeaWolves held a 15-11 advantage in the third quarter to take a 55-31 lead into the final frame.

McCarver, Jones and Rogers put together a 6-0 run midway through the fourth quarter and after a three-pointer by Olivia Denton, Aragon closed the scoring with a foul shot before Alaska Anchorage claimed the 73-41 victory.

Six players scored at least five points for Alaska Anchorage with Safiyyah Yasin leading the way with 21 points on 7-12 shooting. Yazmeen Goo added 16 points.

WOU now returns home to host Corban on Monday, December 16 starting at 3 p.m. inside the NPE Building Gym. The Wolves will then play at Division I Boise State in an exhibition contest on Wednesday, December 18 before returning to GNAC play on Thursday, January 2 at home against Western Washington starting at 5:15 p.m.
