Delaney Smith Sends Back Five Blocks as Volleyball Opens DII West Region Showcase Against Pair of Tough Opponents

TURLOCK, Calif. – Delaney Smith opened the Division II West Region Showcase posting five blocks over the first two games as the Western Oregon University volleyball team began the day with Stanislaus State and Sonoma State with the Warriors taking the first game of the day 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-21) and the SeaWolves also grabbing the 3-0 win (25-11, 25-13, 25-19) on Thursday.

"I appreciate the effort our players gave today and we had a solid attitude going in," Head Coach Stacy Metro said. "We continue to learn and grow and work on getting better each time. We will see what tomorrow brings against Holy Names."

Sianna DeCarli had a big opener of the tournament as she ripped off 13 kills and posted a .321 hitting percentage against Stanislaus State. She also added a block and four digs. Aubrey Stanton had 23 assists, Descinda Slaughter spun in a pair of service aces, Delaney Smith sent back three blocks and Allie Spear had 10 digs.

The block party started just a few points in for Smith when she recorded a solo block five points in. That helped ignite a 3-0 run to give the Wolves (0-5) a 4-3 lead in the first set against the Warriors (2-2) with Sarah Crowell and DeCarli adding kills during the run. Still within two at 9-7, Stanislaus State went on a 4-1 run to move out to a 13-8 lead. The Wolves kept fighting with Crowell posting back-to-back kills and then a double-block by Delaney Smith and Kimmie Bain had the deficit at just two. A DeCarli kill and then an attack error evened the set at 14. WOU made one last push in the set with Crowell posting a service ace and a double-block from DeCarli and Delaney Smith kept it a one-point set. The Warriors went on a 6-0 run to close the set at 25-18.

Delaney Smith and Lauren Smith opened the points for WOU in the second set with kills. Stanislaus State quickly jumped out to a 6-2 lead and later pushed out to a 10-3 advantage. A kill by Bain brought the Wolves back to within five, but that would be as close as they would get with Stanislaus State taking the second set at 25-12 to move out to a 2-0 lead.

The Warriors started the third set on a 4-1 run. A Slaughter service ace had the deficit back to one and later after kills from Allyson Crisp and DeCarli, WOU moved out to a 7-6 lead. A kill from Mackenzie York, a service ace from Stanton and then a ball handling error evened the set at 12. The Wolves made a couple more runs to get as close as 22-21 with Bain posting a kill and a service ace from Slaughter before Stanislaus State finished the set on a 3-0 run for the 25-21 set win and 3-0 match victory.

Stanislaus State tallied 37 kills to six errors in 83 chances for a .373 hitting percentage. WOU answered with 29 kills to 20 errors in 97 chances for a .093 hitting percentage.
