Volleyball Rolls Past Hawks in Friday Sweep

TURLOCK, Calif. – Backed by a 30-kill effort and a nearly .300 hitting percentage, the Western Oregon University volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 win (25-17, 25-17, 25-13) over Holy Names Friday during day two of the DII West Region Showcase.

"Obviously pretty happy for the team that we got our first win. This helps with positive reinforcement and to believe in ourselves with the progress that we are making," Head Coach Stacy Metro said.

Sianna DeCarli led the offense with nine kills, with Kimmie Bain adding six kills. Delaney Smith, Lauren Smith and Allyson Crisp all added four kills. Aubrey Stanton dished out 16 assists, while Emily West added 10. Lauren Smith spun in three service aces. Allie Spear had 12 digs and Crisp sent back six blocks, including three solo. WOU (1-5) tallied 30 kills to just nine errors in 75 chances to hit .280. The defense held Holy Names (1-2) to a -.080 hitting percentage with 20 kills to 27 errors in 87 chances.

"It was really great to earn out first win today!" Crisp said. "There was a lot of energy on the court and we all had a lot of fun. Looking forward to more games like this!"

After the teams traded points early in the first set, a pair of service aces from Lauren Smith moved the Wolves out to an 8-6 lead. The Hawks went on an 8-2 run to jump out to a 14-10 lead. Out of a WOU timeout, the Wolves responded going on a 7-1 run to take a 17-17 lead and forced Holy Names to take a timeout. Crisp and DeCarli each had multiple kills during the run, while Sarah Crowell added a kill. Holding a two-point lead at 19-17, WOU closed the first set strong reeling off the next six points to take the set at 25-17. After a service error, Lauren Smith spun in a service ace and after a few errors by the Hawks, Bain and Crowell tallied kills to close the set.

"It was great to get our first win under our belts!" Spear said. "We still have things to work on and lots to learn, but today showed us what we are capable of. And playing like that, as a team and all in, we have an exciting road ahead."

A quick 5-1 run helped ignite WOU to start the second set with Mikayla Seiler tallying an ace and then a double-block from Lauren Smith and Delaney Smith closed the run. After Holy Names fought back to at one point take the lead, the Wolves responded moving out to a 16-13 lead with DeCarli tallying a kill and a solo block from Crisp. A kill by Lauren Smith a point later helped start a 3-0 run with Crisp adding a solo block and then teaming with Crowell for a double-block at 19-14. WOU controlled the set the rest of the way with Lauren Smith tallying a kill and a service ace by Seiler closed the set at 25-17 and moved the Wolves to a 2-0 match lead.

"I think we played super great today! Everyone's energy on the court created a super fun and intense environment for us to play in," Stanton said. "Everyone was going all out for balls on defense and our hitters swung super aggressively. I am really proud of our team tonight and excited for what's to come!"

Holding a 6-4 lead in the third set, a big 13-0 run by the Wolves put the set and the match out of reach. During the lengthy run, Crowell, Bain, Crisp and Delaney Smith all recorded points. Following a run by the Hawks, WOU closed the match strong with DeCarli tallying a pair of kills around a solo block by Lauren Smith for the 25-13 third set win and 3-0 match victory.

WOU controlled a majority of the categories including kills (30-20), blocks (11-2), assists (28-18) and digs (32-30). Fanny Chow led Holy Names with six kills, Jasmine Yun dished out 15 assists, Felicya Zuniga had eight digs and four players sent back a block.

WOU will close the DII West Region Showcase tomorrow (Saturday) when they face Notre Dame de Namur starting at 2:30 p.m.
