Volleyball Picks Up Second Straight Sweep at DII West Region Showcase

TURLOCK, Calif. – Back-to-back strong performances helped the Western Oregon University volleyball team close the DII West Region Showcase strong as they picked up another 3-0 sweep (25-16, 25-17, 25-22) this time against Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday afternoon.

After dominating Holy Names in a 3-0 win the night before, WOU (2-5) kept the momentum right into Saturday's game picking up another 3-0 victory. The Wolves tallied 39 kills to 15 errors in 90 chances for a .267 hitting percentage, while holding the Argonauts to a .091 percentage with 28 kills to 20 errors in 88 chances. WOU held the edge in service aces (6-4), assists (39-26) and digs (36-31).

Individually, Sianna DeCarli paced the offense with nine kills, while Kimmie Bain added seven and Sarah Crowell, Lauren Smith and Allyson Crisp all posted six. Emily West spun in two service aces, Aubrey Stanton dished out 19 assists and Allie Spear had eight digs.

"This win was a big one for us!" DeCarli said. "We really just tuned in to everything the coaches have been preaching to us for the past month and proved ourselves with the back-to-back victories."

Right out of the gate WOU went on a 3-0 run with a pair of kills from DeCarli and an attack error by Notre Dame de Namur. The lead stretched to 11-5 when Bain tallied a kill around three errors by the Argonauts. After Notre Dame de Namur pushed back to within three at 16-13, WOU put the opening set away thanks to a 6-0 run with Crisp and Bain tallying kills around a few errors by the Argonauts. Crowell helped move WOU to set point at 24-16 and then an attacking error by the Argonauts gave the Wolves the 25-16 first set win.

"It felt so good to get the back-to-back wins tonight. The team played with confidence and we are really developing some strong chemistry," Crowell said. "These wins make us so excited to compete in our first conference matches coming up. I think our potential really showed through tonight and it was fun to be apart of!"

Lauren Smith helped ignite the second set with a pair of kills before Allie Spear spun in a service ace for the 4-2 lead. Holding a one-point lead, three straight errors by the Argonauts and then a kill by Crowell had WOU looking at a 10-5 lead. Similar to the first set, Notre Dame de Namur pushed back to within three when the Wolves started to make some separation with a kill from Bain, one from Crisp and then a service ace from Crisp to jump out to a 21-15 lead. DeCarli then closed the set with a kill at 25-17 to give WOU a 2-0 lead in the match.

DeCarli and Crisp got things started in the third when DeCarli hit a pair of kills and then Crisp sent back a solo block for the 4-1 lead. Holding an 11-10 lead, WOU reeled off four straight points with West spinning in a service ace and a kill by Crisp for the 15-10 lead. The Argonauts fought back to tie at 17 when Bain posted a kill and Stanton tallied a service ace at 19-17. The back-and-forth set continued with Notre Dame de Namur getting to within one a couple of times down the stretch, with the last coming at 23-22. From that point forward, WOU closed the door with Lauren Smith tallying a kill and then one from Crowell gave WOU the third set at 25-22 and the match at 3-0.

Diamond Hollis led Notre Dame de Namur in kills with eight, Chantal Zahrndt had three blocks, Samantha Johnson had 10 assists and Rowan Jack tallied nine digs.

WOU will now have a quick turnaround to prepare for GNAC play when they will travel to Portland to face Concordia on Tuesday night with first serve set for 7 p.m.
