Crowell and DeCarli Combine for 25 Kills as Volleyball Runs Into Tough Cavs’ Squad in GNAC Opener

PORTLAND, Ore. – Sarah Crowell posted 13 kills and hit .300, while Sianna DeCarli added 12 kills and hit .250 to lead the offense. Despite the 25 combined kills, the Western Oregon University volleyball team wasn't able to get part Concordia with the Cavaliers taking the 3-0 win (25-15, 25-22, 26-24) Tuesday night in the GNAC opener for both teams.

WOU (2-6, 0-1 GNAC) posted more kills (44-40), but Concordia (3-5, 1-0 GNAC) had eight less attacking errors to hit .304 to .225 for the Wolves. The Wolves also held the edge in assists (44-38), while digs (46-44) were close and the Cavs held a 7-2 edge in blocks and service aces.

In addition to the big games from Crowell and DeCarli, Aubrey Stanton dished out 33 assists, Allie Spear had 12 digs with Lauren Smith adding 11 and four players had a block assist.

Concordia came out strong in the opening set moving out to a 7-1 lead. Crowell, DeCarli and Allyson Crisp all tallied kills throughout the set, but the Wolves were never able to grab traction in the set with the Cavaliers taking the opening set 25-15.

The second set was a different story with the Wolves moving out to an early lead at 7-6 on a kill by Crisp. A kill by Lauren Smith kept the set even at 12 and later a kill by Crowell pushed WOU back in front at 15-14. Tied at 16, a Crowell kill and then two from DeCarli had the Wolves looking at a 19-16 lead. Concordia responded with a 5-0 run to jump in front at 21-19. Kills by DeCarli and Crisp kept WOU within a point at 22-21 and again at 23-22 before the Cavaliers won the final two points for a 25-22 second set win and 2-0 match lead.

A kill by Delaney Smith opened the third set as a double-block by DeCarli and Delaney Smith and then a kill by DeCarli had the Wolves out to a 3-0 lead. After fighting back to tie, WOU moved back in front at 9-8 on a kill by Crowell. Stanton spun in a service ace and an attacking error had the Wolves with a 13-11 lead. Trailing 19-16, WOU responded to get back in the set with Lauren Smith pounding a kill and after a few errors, Crowell and Delaney Smith had kills had WOU holding a 21-20 lead. Crowell kept WOU with the lead at 22-21 and after Delaney Smith and DeCarli kept the set tied at 23 and 24, Concordia closed the third set with the final two points for the 26-24 set win and 3-0 match victory.

Simone Gordon paced Concordia with 10 kills, while Katelyn Brandenburg and Zoe DiNardo added nine kills apiece. Kahua Tilton had 24 assists and on defense Callie Wilkins had 15 digs and Elyssa Rose sent back five blocks.

WOU will remain on the road when they travel to Billings, Mont., to face MSU Billings this coming Saturday starting at 6 p.m. Pacific.
