Soccer Travels to California for Games Against Cal State Monterey Bay and Academy of Art

SEASIDE/SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. –The Western Oregon University soccer team continues their road swing to start the season as they travel to California to face Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday at 7 p.m. and Academy of Art on Monday at 11 a.m.

Following a lengthy trip to Colorado, the Wolves picked up a dominating 6-0 win over Western Colorado before falling just short to Adams State, 1-0.

"We're excited to be back on the road this week. We know these next two games will be tough ones," Head Coach Kacey Bingham said. "We learned a lot from our two games last week and are looking forward to making some adjustments and moving forward."

WOU has taken 22 shots, with 12 landing on goal, while holding opponents to six shots and just two on goal. Six players have tallied a point led by five points from Alyssa Tomasini with two goals and an assist. Of the four shots she has taken, two have landed on goal with both went in the net. Kaili Brundage has four points off a pair of goals and has taken three shots, with all three landing on goal. Isabelle Creighton has three points with a goal and an assist, as she has taken six shots, with three ending up on goal. Selene Konyn rounding out the four with a goal as she has a goal and an assist for three points as her only shot ended up in the net. Hannah Rispler and Danielle VanOrd have each added an assist. In goal, Alex Qualls has started both games logging 135 minutes and has a save to go with a 1-1 record. Cassidy Flammang has played 45 minutes and help contribute to the 6-0 shutout win over Western Colorado.

WOU ranks 26th nationally and lead the GNAC in assists per game (2.50), 61st and second in the GNAC in goals against average (.500), 35th and first in the GNAC in points per game (8.50), 31st and first in the GNAC in scoring offense per game (3.0), 64th and second in the GNAC in shutout percentage (.500), 27th and first in the GNAC in total assists (5), 26th and first in the GNAC in total goals (6), 30th and first in the GNAC in total points (17) and second in the GNAC in won-loss percentage (.500).

Individually, Creighton, Konyn, Rispler, Tomasini and VanOrd are all tied for the GNAC lead in assists per game (.50) and all five are tied for 79th nationally and first in the GNAC in total assists (1). Creighton and Konyn are both tied for third in the GNAC in total goals (1) and total points (3). Tomasini is tied with Brundage as the two are tied for 38th nationally and first in the GNAC in goals per game (1.0). Tomasini is tied for 46th nationally and first in the GNAC in points per game (2.5), 43rd nationally and first in the GNAC in total points (5). Tomasini and Brundage are both tied for 35th nationally and first in the GNAC in total goals (2). Brundage is 69th nationally and second in the GNAC in points per game (2.0) and is 76th nationally and second in the GNAC in total points (4).

Cal State Monterey Bay is 3-0 to start the season picking up wins over Northwest Nazarene (1-0), Hawaii Hilo (2-1) and Menlo College (4-1). The Otters have taken 33 shots, with 18 landing on goal, while opponents have taken 34 shots with 19 on goal.

Seven players have at least a point with Sophia Zertuche and Lia Kilgore each have two goals. Sierra Levy and Allexxis Hand have each added a goal. In goal, Alyssa Noh has started all three games logging 286 minutes and has 16 saves and a .889 save percentage.

WOU and Cal State Monterey Bay have met once since 2005 with the Wolves taking the 1-0 win on the road.

Academy of Art is 2-1 on the season with wins against Humboldt State (2-0) and Saint Martin's (3-1), while falling to San Francisco State (1-3). They will play Mills in Oakland on Friday before facing the Wolves on Monday.

The Knights have taken 23 shots with 12 landing on goal, while opponents have taken 42 shots with 22 landing on goal. Anissa Wilson leads the way with 10 points, scoring five goals. Sydney Cooke adds a goal and Brooklyn Villapudua has two points on two assists. Five players have at least a point. In goal, Lara Pflicke has started all three games logging 255 minutes and has 18 saves and a .857 save percentage.

The teams have split the previous two meetings with WOU winning the first meeting in 2016 (1-0) on the road and then Academy of Art claimed the 2-1 win in Monmouth last year. In the 2018 meeting, WOU scored first when Alexie Morris scored on an assist from Brundage before the Knights scored a pair of second half goals for the 2-1 win. WOU held a 10-7 shot advantage, while Academy of Art held a 5-3 edge on goal.
