MONMOUTH, Ore. – Hosting their first regular season home game of the season on Thursday, the Western Oregon Wolves were dealt a 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-16) loss at the hands of the Western Washington Vikings at NPE Gym.
Western Oregon (2-8, 0-3 GNAC) improved their defensive numbers throughout the three-set match, holding Western Washington (11-0, 3-0 GNAC) to a hit percentage .161 points lower in set three than in the opener.
The Wolves grabbed their first lead of the match to open the second set, getting a kill from
Delaney Smith to open the game. Smith had a season-high six kills to lead the Wolves' attack on an effective .600 hit percentage. The sophomore added on one dig and one block.
WOU held a two-point lead as late as 11-9 in the set, but the Vikings finished the game on a 16-4 run to pull away.
Calley Heilborn led Western Washington with 12 kills, nine digs and a block. Alison Davenport wasn't far behind, contributing 11 kills on a .500 hit percentage.
The third set opened with tight competition as well, with WOU holding another 11-9 lead through 20 points, but a Vikings' run over the latter half buried the match.
Sophomore
Aubrey Stanton had 17 assists with nine digs, falling just short of the double-double, while also picking up a kill, block and a service ace.
Allyson Crisp contributed four kills and four blocks up front, delivering an efficient .429 hit percentage.
The Wolves will host Simon Fraser Saturday, Sept. 28, as they search for their first conference win of the season. First serve against the Clan is set for 2 p.m. PDT at NPE Gym.
