Soccer Dominates Western Colorado 6-0 in Season Opening Win

Box Score ALAMOSA, Colo. – It was the start the Western Oregon University soccer team was looking for and more as they dominated in every category on their way to taking the convincing 6-0 win over Western Colorado in the season opener for both teams. The game was played on a neutral site in Alamosa at Adams State.

"This is a great way to start the 2019 season. We asked the team to show up from the start of the game," Head Coach Kacey Bingham said in her WOU debut. "We had so many players contribute. Our goal is to work on getting better every game we play."

Alyssa Tomasini and Kaili Brundage each scored a pair of goals, while Isabelle Creighton and Selene Konyn added a goal apiece. Konyn, Tomasini, Hannah Rispler, Creighton and Danielle VanOrd all added assists.

"Today I felt like our energy and work ethic was there. From the minute we stepped on to the pitch for warm-ups we were focused and we were ready to go work hard for 90 minutes," Tomasini said. "The elevation was something that we're not used to and had to adjust to, but I feel like we went out there with confidence and gave our all which helped us get the result we wanted."

Just over 13 minutes in Tomasini broke free for the first goal of the season off an assist by Konyn for the 1-0 lead. Just over two minutes later, Tomasini was back in position for her second goal when a hand ball in the box resulted in a penalty kick in which she knocked home for the 2-0 lead at the 15:30 mark.

"This was a great start to the new season. We're beginning to come together as a team and create an identity for ourselves and this program," Konyn said. "We are reintroducing ourselves into the GNAC and strive to make an impact that will resonate for many years to come."

Creighton then joined the scoring a couple of minutes later in the 17th minute when she took a pass from Tomasini and scored for the 3-0 lead. The Wolves struck once more before the half when Kaili Brundage busted loose taking advantage of great assists from both Rispler and Creighton to make it a 4-0 lead.

"Today everyone on the team showed up and played their part. We've been working hard from spring season to now to make necessary changes to our style of play and it paid off," Creighton said. "We're all motivated and excited after a 6-0 win, but there's still a ton of work to do!"

WOU continued with the pressure in the second half with Brundage scoring in the 59th minute and Konyn closing the scoring in the 83rd minute taking a pass from VanOrd and knocking in the goal for the final margin of 6-0.

"We came out not knowing anything about Western Colorado and started off really strong. It's exciting starting off the season with a win and to see us play together well on the field is always good too," Brundage said. "I'm looking forward to seeing how we improve and succeed this season."

WOU controlled play throughout generating 14 shots, with nine landing on goal. Western Colorado was limited to just one shot that didn't land on goal. The Wolves had nine corner kicks to one for the Mountaineers. Alex Qualls picked up the shutout victory in goal.

Western Oregon will remain in Colorado to face Adams State on Sunday starting at 10 a.m. Pacific. Live stats will be available for the game.
