Volleyball Battles at Concordia Tournament to Open 2019 Season

PORTLAND, Ore.  – The Western Oregon University volleyball team came close to forcing a deciding fifth set in the first game of the year against MSU Denver before the Roadrunners held on for the 3-1 (25-18, 24-26, 25-14, 26-24) victory. In the second game, the Wolves nearly grabbed the first set against Cal Poly Pomona before the Broncos took the 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-14) victory as WOU opened the season at the Concordia Tournament in Portland.

In the first match of the new season, WOU jumped out to a pair of early leads in the first set against MSU Denver, moving out to a 3-1 advantage with Sianna DeCarli posting a kill and a bad set by the Roadrunners. MSU Denver caught fire a few points later to jump out to an 11-5 lead. WOU kept plugging away, working their way back into the set at 20-16 on a kill by Aubrey Stanton and again at 23-18 on a kill by Sarah Crowell before MSU Denver took the 25-18 first set win.

The Wolves responded in the second set, quickly moving out to a 5-1 lead behind points from Crowell, Makenzie York, Mikayla Seiler, DeCarli and Stanton. After the Roadrunners came back to tie the set on a couple of occasions, WOU went on a quick 4-1 run to move out to a 15-11 lead with York starting the run with a kill. She then added another kill before Allyson Crisp and DeCarli teamed for a double-block and MSU Denver had an attacking error. Things tightened back up down the stretch, as the teams were tied at 23 and again at 24 when WOU closed strong with points from Lauren Smith and a service ace from DeCarli for the 26-24 second set win.

MSU Denver came out of the gate strong in the third set moving out to a 6-3 lead. The Wolves fought back a couple of times during the set getting back to 15-10 and later at 17-12, but the Roadrunners closed strong going on a 8-2 run to take the third set at 25-14.

Trailing 10-9 in the fourth set, WOU grabbed a three-point lead thanks to a 4-0 run with points from DeCarli, Kimmie Bain, Seiler and Crowell for the 13-10 lead. DeCarli kept the Wolves in front at 18-17 to help setup the back-and-forth finish. Down 22-20, WOU responded with a kill from Bain and an attack error by the Roadrunners to even the set at 22. A Crisp kill and attack error by the Roadrunners tied the set at 23 and again at 24 before MSU Denver was able to tally the final two points for the 26-24 fourth set win and 3-1 match victory.

Overall for the match WOU hit .242 with 48 kills to 19 errors in 120 chances. MSU Denver posted a .333 percentage with 58 kills to 18 errors in 120 chances. Individually, Crowell led the way with 11 kills, followed by nine each from Crisp and DeCarli. Stanton dished out 33 assists, Allie Spear had 11 digs and Crisp sent back four blocks.

Rylee Hladky paced the Roadrunners with 16 kills, while Kayla White added 13. Joli Sadler had 27 assists, Caiden Rexius added 16 digs and Mikayla McClinton sent back six blocks.

In the second match of the day, WOU battled hard to try and claim the first set, but Cal Poly Pomona was able to take the opening set and never looked back.
WOU took their first lead of the match at 2-1 on a kill by Smith. Later the Wolves moved out to a 5-4 lead on a block by Crisp and DeCarli. A 3-0 run helped even the set at 11 with Bain, Crowell adding points around a bad set by the Broncos. After a few big runs by Cal Poly Pomona, WOU used a 4-0 run to get back in the set with Crisp posting a kill and later a service ace around a pair of Bronco errors to keep the deficit at just two, 20-18. With WOU trailing 24-18, three straight points kept the set alive before the Broncos closed the set with the 25-21 win.

In the second set, Cal Poly Pomona jumped out quickly to a 5-0 lead. WOU fought back to within four a couple of times at 14-10 on a kill by DeCarli and at 15-11 on another kill by DeCarli before Cal Poly Pomona used a 9-0 run on their way to taking the set at 25-13.

The Broncos moved out to a 7-2 lead in the third set and out of a WOU timeout, York tallied a kill and a pair of attacking errors by Cal Poly Pomona had the Wolves within two at 7-5. The Wolves tried to keep coming, getting to within five a few times before the Broncos broke away for the 25-14 third set win and 3-0 match victory.

Cal Poly Pomona hit .322 with 42 kills to 14 errors in 87 chances, while WOU hit .154 with 25 kills to 13 errors in 78 chances. DeCarli led the offense with nine kills, Stanton dished out 17 assists, Smith and Spear each had five digs and four players had a block.

Ally Wilder led the Broncos with 11 kills, Kira Zimmerman had 35 assists, Sarah Clausen added 12 digs and Karah Griffiths sent back four blocks.

WOU will conclude the Concordia Tournament tomorrow (Saturday) when they face Cal State Monterey Bay starting at 9 a.m.
