Track and field to travel north to Portland for weekend meet

PORTLAND, Ore. – Following a successful trip to compete at the University of Washington this past weekend, the Western Oregon University indoor track and field teams will travel up the road to Portland to compete in the University of Portland Indoor Meet #1 this Saturday and Sunday.

In the women's 60-meter hurdles, Ana Popchock, Jenelle Hurley, Michaele Yonkman and Makenzie Smith will compete from WOU. Popchock posted a time of 9.48 at the Dempsey Indoor Meet last week during the qualifications to place 25th. Hurley competed in the high jump last week and reached a mark of 5'3 that also tied with teammate Kalulusno Ngaida. Yonkman and Smith will open their 2020 indoor seasons in Portland. In the men's 60-meter hurdles, Brennen Sorah and Mitch Kruse are set to compete to open their indoor season.

Western Oregon will be well represented in the women's 60-meter dash with Maya Hopwood, Lauren Berry, Kaylee Wright, Lyndee McLauchlin, Darian Wilson and Logan Jackson set to compete. Last week at the UW Preview, Hopwood set a new school record in the event racing to a time of 7.73. Wright also competed crossing with a time of 8.47. Jackson competed last week in the 4x400 helping the team to a time of 4:12.09. Berry, McLauchlin and Wilson will open their indoor seasons this week in Portland. In the men's 60-meter dash, Eli Nafziger, Brandon Wolff, Deshaun Stevens, Garret Phelps will run for the Wolves. All four will be competing for the first time this indoor season.

Wilson and Hurley will also compete in the long jump for the first time this indoor season. In the high jump, Hurley, Wright, McLauchlin and Smith will also enter this event, while Ngaida will join them. It will be the second straight week for Ngaida and Hurley to compete in the event. Kruse, Jake Thompson, Stevens and Garret Phelps will compete in the men's long jump all for the first time this season.

In the men's high jump, Devin Hasher and Antonio Robledo are set to compete. Hasher reached a mark of 6'2 in Seattle last week. It will be the first competition of the season for Robledo.

Moana Gianotti is set to compete once again in the weight throw. Last week she threw the shot put to a mark of 6'2. In the men's weight throw, Sam Cole, Karsten Collins, Nick Sieber and Owen Collins are set to compete. Cole had a throw of just over 48 feet in last week's weight throw. It will be the first competition of the season for Collins, Sieber and Collins.

In the women's 3k, Kaylin Cantu and Faerynn Glasscock are set to open their indoor seasons. In the men's 3k, Hunter Mosman, Dominic Giordano and Sawyer Heckard will all open their indoor seasons this weekend.

Jillian Green, who competed in the 600-meter last week, is set to compete in the mile this week. In the men's mile, Adam Alnazer and Zach Kanelis will represent WOU and will open the indoor seasons for both. Alnazer competed in the 800 last week in Seattle posting a time of 1:55.91. Kanelis added a time of 1:58.60 in the same event last week.

Green will also run in the women's 800-meter, along with Kendra Zimmerdahl. Zimmerdahl will be opening her indoor season. The Wolves will have a loaded field in the men's 800 with Hunter Hutton, Trey Reed, Emmett Klus, Teylor Howard, Carson Austin, Chase Eckendels, Bryce Mefford and Stephen Fey are set to compete. Hutton competed last week in the 800 collecting a time of 1:56.37. Reed, Klus, Howard, Austin, Eckendels, Mefford and Fey are all set to open their indoor seasons this week.

In the women's 400-meter, Grayson Burke, Bethanie Altamirano, Popchock, Yonkman, Olivia Jimenez, Sarra Soladey, Danielle Clem and Rachel Bayly are set to compete. Burke, Altamirano and Clem all competed last week in the 4x400 relay. Jimenez, Soladey and Bayly will all be opening their seasons this week. In the men's 400-meter, Lashaun Emile will enter the event for WOU after he competed last week in the UW Preview helping the 4x400 relay to a fourth-place finish.

In the women's 200-meter, Hopwood, Hurley, Wright, Jackson, Soladey, Taryn Wilson, Bayly and Smith lead a loaded WOU field. Wilson will open her indoor season this weekend as well.

In the 4x400 relay teams, WOU has the foursome of Altamirano, Jackson, Popchock and Clem set to compete. In the men's relay, two teams will compete with the first group of Max Carmona, Fey, Klus and Reed in one, while Stevens, Kruse, Sorah and Thompson will run in the other relay.
