Complete First Day Results
NAMPA, Idaho – Jenelle Hurley, Devin Hasher, the women's distance medley relay and Moana Gianotti all tallied points for the Western Oregon University track and field teams during the first day of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships on Friday. Several other Wolves picked up strong preliminary times to advance to Saturday's finals.
Through the first day of events, WOU has 15 points on the women's side to sit eighth, while the men have three points and are ninth with lots of events left on the schedule for Saturday to allow the Wolves to gain lots of points.
Hurley opened the day strong placing third in her first collegiate pentathlon to pick up six team points. The freshman collected 3,334 points to finish just behind Seattle Pacific's Scout Cai with 3,406 points. Hurley opened the pentathlon placing seventh in the 60-meter hurdles crossing with a time of 9.57. In the high jump, she reached a height of 5-2.25 to place her fifth in the event. The shot put was up next and Hurley had a throw of 32-0 to come in fourth, reaching her top throw on her third and final attempt. The long jump helped move her into a top-three position when she reached a mark of 17-11 to come in second. She then closed with the 800-meters and crossed in seventh with a time of 2:35.34. Hurley's marks in the hurdles, long jump and shot put are all season-bests. Her pentathlon mark is also the third-best in the WOU record books.
"I was really nervous going into it because it was my first pentathlon, but I'm happy with how I did!" Hurley said. "I got a few new personal records and overall had a lot of fun!"
Hasher picked up the first points for WOU on the men's side in the high jump when he reached a height of 6-7 to come in sixth. His new mark is also a season-best and moves him to sixth in the WOU record books. His finish gave the Wolves three team points.
"Reaching a new season best was everything I could've wanted for the last meet of the indoor season," Hasher said. "Coach Octavious Gillespie-Bennett and I have really been dissecting the jump lately so it was exciting to see it come together a little bit today. I'm really excited to keep working hard in the jumping events as we transition into our outdoor season."
The women's DMR team of Jillian Greene, Michaela Yonkman, Grayson Burke and Grace Knapp helped gain the Wolves six points when they crossed in third with a time of 12:24.45. That currently sits sixth in the WOU record books.
Gianotti collected a new personal-best in the weight throw when she hit a distance of 50-10.25 to come in sixth and add three points to the team score. After opening the indoor season with a throw of 49-5, Gianotti has continued to better her distance, as during the second Portland Indoor Meet, she had her new best mark of 49-9, before hitting over 50 at the GNAC Championships.
"The weight throw today didn't go as expected and I had a few setbacks in the beginning, but I was able to come back and throw a new personal record of 50 feet," Gianotti said. "It felt pretty good to be able to come back from a shaky day to PR and come in sixth place! I'm just ready to come back tomorrow and throw the shot put!"
Mitch Kruse is currently in fifth in the heptathlon through four events to lead four Wolves entered in the heptathlon. The four Wolves will close the event on Saturday with the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and mile run. So far, he has 2,469 points and is just 16 points back of third. In the first event of the day, Kruse crossed with a time of 7.72 to come in eighth in the 60-meters. Then in the long jump, he reached a distance of 20-10.50 to come in fifth. He moved up the leaderboard with his strong throw in the shot put that hit a mark of 36-9 to come in second. He continued his push towards the top with another second-place result, this time in the high jump reaching a height of 5-9.75.
Sorah is right behind Kruse in the heptathlon collecting 2,366 points to sit in sixth. Jake Thompson is in eighth with 2,298 points, while Deshaun Stevens is ninth with 2,266 points. Sorah started the heptathlon strong when he came in fourth in the 60-meter with a time of 7.42. Stevens came in ninth with a time of 7.75, while Thompson placed 11th with a time of 7.80. Stevens led the group in the long jump reaching a distance of 20-11.75 to come in third. Thompson came in seventh with a distance of 20-7.75 and Sorah in ninth reaching a mark of 19-11.50. In the shot put, Thompson hit a mark of 34-11.75 to come in fourth, with Sorah right behind hitting a distance of 33-4 to place him fifth. Stevens came in ninth with a toss of 29-10. In the high jump, Stevens and Sorah each scaled a height of 5-6 to tie for seventh. Thompson hit 5-5 to place ninth. Kruse, Sorah, Thompson and Stevens will weap-up the heptathlon on Saturday.
Other events where WOU was able to gain placers to final events on Saturday via the preliminaries. The men's 800-meter will be an almost all WOU final with the Wolves qualifying five in the event. Leading the way was Derek Holdsworth with a time of 1:55.38, while Max Carmona was right behind in second with a time of 1:55.78. Adam Alnazer gave the Wolves the top-three in the prelims when he crossed with a time of 1:56.19. Zach Kanelis came in seventh with a time of 1:57.78 and Trey Reed in eighth with a time of 1:58.58. Neal Cranston just missed qualifying when he crossed with a time of 1:59.48. Stephen Fey came in 13th with a time of 2:01.31.
Maya Hopwood qualified for both the 60-meter and 200-meter, as she led the way in the 60 posting a time just off her own school record of 7.59. Then in the 200, she came in sixth in the prelims with a time of 25.19. Popchock also ran in the event and crossed with a time of 26.39, which is a new personal best and placed her 13th.
Sorah tied his personal best in the 60-meter hurdles and was just able to snag the last qualifying spot when he crossed with a time of 8.74 to come in eighth and move to tomorrow's final.
Dominique Loggins continues to excel in the 60-meter as he led the way in the prelims posting a new season-best of 6.91, which is also third-best in the WOU record books. He far and away led the group with the next runner crossing at 7.02.
Popchock just missed qualifying in the 60-meter hurdles as she put together a new personal best time of 9.23 to come in ninth, falling just .02 short of qualifying for the finals.
Gabe Arce-Torres grabbed a solid time of 50.02 in the 400-meter to come in fourth during the preliminaries and move to the finals.
Bethanie Altamirano, Yonkman and Sarra Soladey all competed in the 400-meter with Altamirano coming in 12th with a time of 1:00.59 to place 12th in preliminaries. Yonkman crossed at 1:01.59 to place 14th and Soladey in 16th with a time of 1:01.79.
Olivia Jimenez competed in the 800-meters and clocked a time of 2:26.46 to place 13th in the preliminaries.
Jarren Ford ran in the 200-meter where he posted a time of 23.29 to come in 19th during preliminaries.
Sawyer Heckard put together a personal best run in the 5k when he crossed with a time of 15:25.93 to place 11th in the finals of the event. Kaylin Cantu also ran in the women's 5k where she finished with a time of 19:22.37 to come in 12th during the finals.
The men's DMR of Emmett Klus, Aaron Hanible, Hunter Hutton and Kanelis just missed picking up a point when they crossed in ninth with a time of 10:38.01, with Northwest Nazarene in eighth crossing at 10:37.57.
In the men's weight throw, WOU just missed picking up points when Owen Collins hit a mark of 51-3.75 to place ninth. Karsten Collins was right behind his brother in 10th with a throw of 49-11.75. Nick Sieber hit a mark of 47-0.75 to come in 17th, while Sam Cole added a throw of 46-8 to come in 20th.
Hurley also competed in the long jump separately outside of the pentathlon reaching a mark of 17-3.50 to come in 11th. Darian Wilson reached a distance of 16-6.50 to come in 19th.
Stevens and Thompson both entered into the long jump outside of the heptathlon with Stevens hitting a mark of 21-8 to come in 12th and Thompson at a distance of 19-9 to come in 21st.
Saturday will be a loaded day of events for the Wolves as the day will begin with the final events of the heptathlon. Live results for Saturday can be found here.
