Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Wolves shoot well, but fall in turnover-plagued loss at NNU

NAMPA, Idaho – The Western Oregon women's basketball team shot nearly 50 percent from the field on Saturday night, but it would not be enough in their final road game of the season, falling 82-62 to the Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks at Johnson Sports Center.

Western Oregon (5-20, 2-16 GNAC) limited their tries from 3-point range in the game, taking just six shots from deep in a successful effort to up offensive efficiency. This included hitting all three shots from beyond the arc taken in the second half and going 4-for-6 in the game.

The Wolves led as late as the 5:15 mark of the first quarter as they took their game inside, holding a 10-9 lead halfway through the opening period. Northwest Nazarene (20-6, 15-3 GNAC) closed the quarter on an 11-5 run, however, to jump out to a multi-possession lead. WOU was able to tie things up at 20 early on in the second, but the Nighthawks pulled away late in the first half to take a lead they would never relinquish.

Despite the solid shooting from the field for Western, 29 turnovers plagued the team's ball security, marking four players with at least four turnovers in the game.

"There's no way we can expect to be in a game turning the ball over like we did tonight," said Western Oregon head coach Holli Howard-Carpenter. "Good teams capitalize on turnovers and it seemed like NNU did on every one tonight. We didn't stay in front of the ball or zone and that leads to threes."

The 29 turnovers was the most in a game by the Wolves this season and the highest single-game total for the team since their last trip to Nampa on Jan. 31, 2019, when they surrendered 36 turnovers. The Nighthawks, conversely, gave up 14 turnovers in the game.

Marina Valles led Northwest Nazarene in scoring with 16 points, eight steals, five assists, a rebound and a block in 25 minutes. She was one of five NNU players to score in double figures.

Shariah Green dropped 15 for the Wolves, picking up three rebounds and an assist as well. Alexis Wright also finished in double figures, scoring a season-high 11 points with five boards off the bench. Wright would account for nearly half the WOU bench scoring in the game.

"Shariah got us going early and Alexis picked up right where she left off," added Howard-Carpenter. "The two played well for us tonight and we needed that."

With the loss, Western Oregon concludes their road schedule for the 2019-20 season, finishing 1-10 in true road contests and 1-11 away from home. They will now return to Monmouth for their final two games of the season, hosting the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves on Thursday, Feb. 27, at 5:15 p.m. and the Alaska Nanooks on Saturday, Feb. 29, at 2 p.m. PST for senior night at NPE Gym.
