Cross Country/Track Announces Recruiting Class (Part 3)

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon University cross country/track and field teams are excited to announce their third batch of recruits. The entire class will be announced in four separate press releases.

JJ Walker

Walker stays in the GNAC after spending last season at Concordia (OR) and also competed at Clackamas CC. During his time at Concordia this past season, Walker opened the outdoor season at the UW Preview competing in the 4x400, high jump and pole vault. He set a PR in the heptathlon in the Ed Jacoby Invite coming in third with 4,791 points posting a pair of top-three finishes in the high jump and pole vault. He later competed in both the Portland Indoor Meet #2 and the GNAC Indoor Track Championships. Walker set several other PR marks during his time at Clackamas posting a top time in the 400 at the L&C Spring Break Open clocking a time of 51.85 to come in second, set a pole vault new mark at the Linfield Jenn Boyman Memorial Invitational with a distance of 14-10.75 to come in first. He added a pair of PR's at the Cougar Open in the long jump with a distance of 21-4 to come in third and in the javelin with a distance of 179-1. He collected a PR in the decathlon at the NWAC Southern Region Championships winning the event again with a total of 6,502 points coming in top-three in nine of the 10 events. Walker closed his career at Clackamas with a PR in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.20 at the NWAC Championships.  Originally from Everett, Wash., Walker was a four-year letterwinner at Mariner High School in both football and track and field, along with competing in wrestling for two seasons.

Marlon Harrison

Harrison also stays in the GNAC after spending last year as a true freshman competing at Concordia (OR). He competed in both the long jump and triple jump this past season for Concordia, opening the season in the triple jump at the UW Preview. He set a PR in the triple jump a week later at the Ed Jacoby Invite with a distance of 44-2.75. Harrison also had a chance to compete in the GNAC Indoor Track and Field Championships competing in both the long jump and triple jump as he set a PR in the long jump hitting a distance of 20-4.25. Originally from Las Vegas, Nev., Harrison competed at Las Vegas High School where he was a three-sport athlete competing in track, basketball and tennis. He was a four-year letterwinner as a jumper on the track team, placing third at state in the triple jump (44-8.5) in 2018, fifth at state in the long jump (21-5.5) also in 2018 and had a PR in the high jump hitting a mark of 6-0.

Rilee Carstensen

Carstensen remains in the state after competing at Newberg High School in Newberg, Ore. She competed in the 200-meter posting a PR of 27.66, in the 60-meter hurdles clocking a PR of 10.32, in the 100-meter hurdles with a PR of 15.3 and in the 300-meter hurdles with a PR of 45.75. Carstensen continued to improve each season with all of her top marks coming during the 2019 indoor/outdoor seasons. During the 2019 outdoor season, Carstensen collected won five events in the 100-meter hurdles, seven event wins in the 300-meter hurdles and was also part of three different relay teams helping the 4x100 pick up six event wins, competing in one meet in the 4x200 and then in the 4x400 with five wins.

Liliana Lyness

Lyness also remains in the state of Oregon after competing at Santiam High School in Mill City, Ore. She posted PR marks in the 100-meter with a time of 14.55, in the shot put reaching a distance of 39-3.25, in the discus hitting a distance of 87-4, in the javelin with a throw of 101-5 and in the high jump hitting a mark of 3-6. During the 2019 outdoor season, Lyness picked up six wins in the shot put, a win in the discus, a pair of top-three results in the javelin and also ran in the 4x100 relay posting a pair of top-three finishes.

Kaiya Leamy

Leamy will travel just up the road from WOU after competing at Crescent Valley High School at Corvallis, Ore. She put together all of her top marks during the 2019 outdoor season competing in the 200-meter with a time of 31.85, in the 400-meter collecting a split time of 1:08.74 from relay, in the 800-meter with a time of 2:37.98, in the 1,500-meter with a time of 5:17.56 and in the 3,000-meter with a time of 11:15.79. Leamy tallied an event win in the 800-meter and later added a runner-up result, placing second in the 1,500, a win in the 3,000 and participated in a trio of 4x400 relays collecting a win and a pair of runner-up results.
