Soccer to Host Saint Martin’s in First Home Game of Spring

MONMOUTH, Ore. – With one game in so far, the Western Oregon University soccer team will now prepare to host their first home game of the spring season this Thursday against Saint Martin's.

The Wolves played Carroll College out of Montana on Mar. 7 in a neutral site game that was played in Vancouver, Wash., with the Saints taking the 2-0 victory. WOU held the advantage in total shots (14-9) and shots on goal (8-7). Chloe Smith led the offense firing six shots and four landing on target. Melinda Ortega added three shots with two on goal and Piper Matson added a pair of shots with one on goal. Kendall Rooney made her debut in goal for the Wolves starting the game and posted a shutout over the first 45 minutes making two saves.

It will be the first of back-to-back meetings between the teams as WOU will then travel to Lacey to face Saint Martin's on Mar. 25.
WOU has gone 10-9-4 against Saint Martin's since 2007, having tallied a 2-0-1 record in the series over the past three meetings. WOU held a 3-1 edge in scoring over those meetings winning a pair of 1-0 games and finishing in a 1-1 draw. During the last meeting on Oct. 26, 2019 in Lacey, WOU scored the only goal in claiming the 1-0 victory. Kaili Brundage picked up the goal in the first half and it withstood to the final whistle. The Wolves held a strong 15-6 advantage in shots, including a 7-2 clip on goal.

Saint Martin's opened the season this past week playing a pair of road games against Northwest Nazarene falling by the same scores of 3-1 in both games. Northwest Nazarene dominated play posting 47 shots with 23 landing on goal, while the Saints took 11 shots with four landing on goal.

Kiersten Madsen and Justine Pauly have the goals so far for Saint Martin's, while Daeh Lindquist added an assist. In goal, Ali Campigotto started and played both games coming away with 17 saves.

Thursday's game will be the first home game for the Wolves since Nov. 9, 2019. WOU was dominate at home during the 2019 season, going 6-1-1.

In order to ensure the health and safety of the student-athletes, coaches, officials and staff, and to provide the best opportunity to complete the spring seasons, spectators will not be allowed for regular-season home events at GNAC institutions for the remainder of the 2020-21 academic year. Additionally, spectators will not be allowed at the GNAC's spring championships. Live video and stats will be available for the games.
